BASIC FUNCTION

The Director of Field Education is an administrator and part-time instructor. The director will engage in instruction, administration, oversight, development of field education, and BCRC program management. The director will be expected to advance the integration of Field Education and vocational issues in academic courses, serving as primary (or co-instructor) for the required Field Education practicums of the Black Congregations initiatives. Goals for the programs include developing partnerships with congregations and expanding beyond religious institutions to include such areas as legislative and public policy advocacy; non-profit management; and international placements. The director must provide support as students reflect upon practical theological issues and negotiate the theory / praxis intersection of theological education.

Supervisory Accountability

The Director of Field Education will supervise students and coordinate with supervisors at various field education sites. The director reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, works collaboratively with the Office of the Dean, Field Education and Continuing Education program committee, and in matters that pertain to BCRC reports to the Executive Director of the BCRC.

Nature and Scope

Internal contacts include administrators, faculty, students, staff and alumni / ae of the department and university. External contacts include Greater Washington and international ecclesial and inter-faith community members, vendors, visitors, and the general public.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Supervise and administer the Field Education programs and manage the Black Congregations Resource Center.
  • Cultivate partnerships with religious communities and site supervisors : recruit and serve as liaison between students and prospective site supervisors in contexts such as congregations, chapels, Capitol Hill, governmental agencies, hospitals, health clinics, specialized ministry settings, food pantries, shelters, social justice advocacy organizations, non-profit organizations, secondary schools (e.g., educators, specialists, and counselors), and arts and cultural centers.
  • Set up metrics for evaluating sites and respective supervisors based on learning and serving covenants and create a database for monitoring student-supervisorial relationships.
  • Maintain compliance with certification and ATS accreditation standards.
  • Provide student supervision and develop programming under the advisement of the Field Education committee, Master of Divinity program committee, and Continuing Education program committee.
  • Schedule frequent site visits to observe students engaged in their fieldwork placement settings.
  • In consultation with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and MDiv Committee establish policies and procedures manual for field education.
  • Manage all financial, technical, and human resources for the position.
  • Perform all other duties assigned by the Dean of the School of Divinity.
  • Core Competencies

  • Have a portfolio demonstrating expert knowledge in spiritual formation, vocational discernment, student placement (national and international), ministry leadership, network collaborations in non-parish settings, and student support, along with willingness to foster and cultivate international opportunities for HUSD.
  • Have a working knowledge of denominational polities, policies, and certification procedures of ecclesiastical bodies representative of the make-up HUSD student population (student advisement purposes).
  • Established relationships with congregations, corporations, and non-profit organizations in the DC / MD / VA area. Excellent writing, verbal, technology, and public relations skills.
  • Minimum Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s level Theological education from an accredited theological school. At least 5 years of professional ministry experience in both parish and non-parish settings.

    50,000-60,000
