Hastings Insurance is currently looking for a Senior Loss Control Consultant to join its Field Commercial Operations team! This position assists Hastings Insurance in maintaining its profitability and meeting company objectives. The consultant will conduct loss control surveys and submit reports to support the underwriting decision-making process, including surveys of more complex accounts. Tasks include providing services that assist policyholders with the identification and control of risks and support their risk management process.

Position Location & Work Format

This position is remote-based, with the individual working from home and traveling to locations to conduct site surveys of Hastings commercial and farm accounts physical property and equipment. A company vehicle, laptop, cell phone, and other necessary equipment will be provided. Work will generally be conducted Monday through Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. to 4 : 30 p.m. However, given the nature of the role, work outside of these hours may occur.

This position will serve our policyholders throughout Wisconsin. Candidates must reside, or be able to relocate to, the territory in which they serve. For this position the ideal candidate will reside in either the Madison or Milwaukee metro areas.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conducts loss control surveys for written or prospective farm and commercial accounts and prepares a survey report that will assist an underwriter with the underwriting decision. These can include services for large and complex commercial or farm operations.

Plans, organizes, leads, and directs loss control activities for multiple policyholders simultaneously.

  • Conducts surveys on larger or complex accounts with unusual features or exposures, or where the underwriter has specific concerns regarding a risk. This can include topics for all lines of business and risk for complex commercial or farm operations, including larger and more complex customer operations.
  • Informs policyholders of identified hazards, utilizes risk solutions tools, and submits formal recommendations for effective loss control measures.
  • Maintains working knowledge of the federal or state OSHA requirements for territory assigned.
  • Assists Hastings Insurance policyholders with the development of their loss control programs and activities.
  • Assists in implementing effective loss control measures, designed to eliminate or reduce potential hazards.

  • Presents training materials to educate policyholders, agents, or internal customers regarding safety, service, or risk management related topics.
  • Works with policyholders to develop tools such as checklists, manuals, and job aids that support and improve existing loss control activities.
  • Assists policyholders in implementing new measures or controls to reduce the risk for loss from potential hazards.
  • Consults with client management to gain cooperation with loss control efforts by promoting the benefits of an effective loss control program, or a solution to a risk issue. Work with client employees to encourage their participation during training that is conducted.
  • Acts as a technical resource for policyholders, agents, Underwriting, team members, or other departments to provide research and responses to help make effective decisions.
  • Assists the Commercial Field Operations Manager with the training of other Loss Control Consultants if requested.
  • Attends loss control seminars, conferences, and meetings arranged by Marketing, Underwriting, or other departments as directed. If requested, help provide training to other Hastings departments on subjects that affect their ability to service external clients.
  • Consults with Underwriting and other Hastings departments in order to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Builds and maintains business relationships and communication with policyholders and agents during surveys, visits to agent offices, or through other communication.
  • Remains current with developments in equipment, work practices, legislation, and other areas that affect safety and liability issues.
  • Actively participates in professional development and continuing education or self-improvement.
  • Other duties assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.
  • Candidate Qualifications & Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, a related field, or equivalent work experience is required.
  • Three years minimum work experience in loss control for a property / casualty insurance company, working on commercial, farm, and industrial accounts.
  • Certificate in General Insurance (INS), or equivalent work experience, is preferred.
  • Ability to work in a team-based culture to interact with team members and other departments to support company objectives.
  • Associate in Risk Management designation is preferred or should be worked toward within the first two years of working in the position.
  • Have good written and verbal communication skills. Be able to appropriately communicate ideas to others.
  • Must have and maintain valid drivers' license and adhere to all Company Fleet Safety guidelines.
