We're excited to begin recruitment for our Summer 2025 Intern Program with opportunities for undergraduate students majoring in Insurance Management, Risk Management, or other business-related programs. Our full-time, paid Internships allow you to gain exposure to real-world applications of your area of study and contribute to our company's success.

As an Intern, you will be paired up with a Mentor who will guide you throughout the internship, which, along with our down-to-earth and approachable culture, will allow you to gain insight and perspective from professionals at all levels of the organization.

You'll also have a chance to network with interns in other functional areas, meet with our Executive staff, and participate in a community-service-related project. With over 135 years of experience behind us, we're eager to share what we know to set you up for success in this stable, diverse industry.

Property Claim Internship Overview

Claim Interns will work within our Property Claim area, either in our Automotive Physical Damage (APD) function or on our Inside Property Claim team. By the end of the internship, they will be able to handle a claim from start to finish.

  • Internships will start on May 12th, 2025 and run for 12 weeks, wrapping up on August 1st.
  • Interns will work a full-time schedule of Monday - Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. - 4 : 30 p.m.
  • Ideally, the Intern will work a hybrid schedule consisting of both in-office (1-2 days per week) at our Hastings, Michigan headquarters, and the rest of the week remotely.

Internship Duties & Tasks

  • Work alongside experienced Claim Adjusters to gain knowledge of the claim handling lifecycle.
  • Utilize HMIC's various applications and tools to support the adjusting and settling of real-world insurance claims.
  • Communicate professionally with both internal and external customers, both verbally and in writing.
  • Provide general support to the department in its day-to-day operations.
  • Participate in projects, either individually or with a mentor, that supports the strategic vision for Claim and HMIC overall.
  • Intern Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program from an accredited institution, majoring in a business-related field. Junior / Senior-level Insurance or Risk Management majors are preferred, but all grade levels will be considered.
  • A minimum of a 3.0 GPA within the major program is preferred.
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA cumulative GPA required.

  • Prior relevant experience through part-time employment or past internships is helpful but not required.
  • Ability to work at least one day weekly at our Hastings, Michigan offices either by residing in the area or within a reasonable commuting distance (housing assistance is not provided).
  • Demonstrated professional written and verbal communication ability.
  • Proficiency with general business applications ( i.e., Microsoft Office).
