Position Overview: We are seeking an experienced and reliable Native Restoration Specialist for the Puʻuwai restoration project located in West Maui. This full-time position will involve working hands-on in the restoration of native ecosystems above Lahaina. The specialist will provide leadership in the efforts focused on reforestation, erosion control, and environmental restoration. This role supports the collective goal of enhancing watershed functions, wildfire resilience, and long-term ecological health.

Key Responsibilities:

• Reforestation and Land Restoration:
• Assist in reforestation efforts, including planting native seedlings within identified restoration areas (kipuka), ensuring the use of native species in line with project guidelines.
• Help monitor and manage restoration areas, tracking the success of plantings and ensuring the restoration of natural habitat.

• Data Collection and Reporting:
• Collect data on site conditions, including soil health, vegetation, water quality, and erosion control effectiveness.
• Prepare reports and updates on field activities, restoration progress, and environmental health, ensuring data is recorded accurately for future project planning.

• Collaboration and Community Engagement:
• Collaborate with project managers, community members, and local organizations to support restoration goals.
• Facilitate community engagement activities (e.g., with students and community groups) to build understanding and involvement in ecological restoration.

• Equipment and Maintenance:
• Operate and maintain field equipment, ensuring proper function and adherence to safety protocols.
• Assist in the maintenance of fire suppression equipment, tools, and vehicles, keeping all machinery in good working condition.

• General Responsibilities and Team Support
• Volunteer Engagement: Lead, educate, and engage volunteers in group settings, ensuring active participation and commitment to the restoration project.
• Safety and Fire Mitigation: Educate and ensure that all volunteers comply with safety standards and fire mitigation protocols. Oversee and guide volunteers to minimize risk and maintain safety during all activities.
• Group Compliance: Monitor and ensure that safety practices and fire mitigation procedures are followed by all team members. Provide guidance and support to ensure compliance and address any concerns or questions as needed.
• Team Collaboration: Assist with other HFU projects and tasks as needed, working collaboratively with the broader HFU staff and organization. Be a team player, supporting the overall goals of HFU and contributing to the success of the larger mission.

Qualifications:

• Education:
• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Agriculture, Environmental Science, Forestry, or a related field preferred.

• Experience:
• At least 2 years of field experience in environmental restoration, agriculture, forestry, or similar 'aina based roles.
• Prior experience with environmental practices in Hawaii or similar environments is preferred.

• Skills:
• Familiarity with native Hawaiian plant species, seed collection, propagation and restoration practices.
• Experience in data collection and reporting for environmental projects.
• Experience with hand tools, including but not limited to, chain saws, weed whackers, other handheld tools.
• Strong communication skills for working with team members, community groups, and stakeholders.

• Physical Requirements:
• Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds, hiking, and working in diverse weather conditions.
• Comfortable working outside in remote areas and on rugged terrain.

• Certifications:
• Valid ID; Driver’s license preferred.
• Fire safety training, pesticide application certifications, or related qualifications are a plus.

Work Environment:

• Fieldwork in diverse outdoor environments, including agricultural lands, forests, and other natural areas in West Maui.
• Exposure to varying weather conditions, including potential fire hazards.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for safety in reforestation, fire safety, and biosanitation activities.

Compensation:

• Commensurate with experience, 40 hours/week
• Possible compressed work week, 4 days, 10 hours/day

Travel

• Some interisland travel expected for training and education purposes.
