Kapa'a Middle School is seeking a passionate and dedicated English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher to join our team of educators. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating a dynamic and supportive learning environment where middle school students develop strong literacy skills, critical thinking abilities, and a love for reading and writing. This position requires a commitment to implementing successful middle school practices as outlined in "The Successful Middle School: This We Believe" by the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE)

Knowledge of AMLE Successful Middle School Practices:

The ELA Teacher should demonstrate a deep understanding and application of AMLE successful middle school practices, including:
  • Educators who value working with young adolescents and are committed to their success.
  • Curriculum that is challenging, exploratory, integrative, and relevant.
  • Varied teaching and learning approaches that respond to students' diverse needs.
  • Multiple learning and teaching approaches that support intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development.

  • School-wide climate that fosters belongingness and emotional and physical safety.

  • Technology and information resources that support learning and teaching.

Working Conditions:
The ELA Teacher will work primarily in a classroom setting within Kapa'a Middle School, with opportunities for collaboration, professional development, and community engagement. The position may require occasional evening or weekend hours for school events, meetings, or student support. Examples of Duties

1. Curriculum Development and Instruction:
  • Develop and deliver engaging and standards-aligned lesson plans that promote literacy, language development, and communication skills.
  • Incorporate diverse texts, genres, and multimedia resources to engage students and promote a deeper understanding of ELA concepts.
  • Foster a growth mindset and lifelong love of learning through purposeful and relevant instructional activities.
2. Student Engagement and Support:
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that values student voice, collaboration, and respectful dialogue.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the individual learning needs and interests of diverse middle school students.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to support their academic growth and development as writers and readers.
3. Family and Community Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with families to support students' literacy development and communicate progress effectively.
  • Engage parents/guardians in literacy-related activities and workshops to promote home-school connections.
  • Foster partnerships with community organizations to enrich ELA instruction and provide authentic learning experiences.
4. Professional Development and Growth:
  • Stay informed about best practices in middle school ELA instruction, literacy education, and adolescent development.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching strategies, integrate technology, and improve student outcomes.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to align curriculum, share resources, and promote a positive and supportive school culture.

Minimum Qualifications

The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree.

If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program you have enrolled is aligned with the teaching line you are hired in.

Upon hire you will need to have a valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit. You may apply for your Hawaii teaching license on the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board Website (https://hawaiiteacherstandardsboard.org/).
