Duties Summary

Performs minor maintenance and repair in pipeline work; assists operators in maintenance and operation of plants; and performs other related duties as required.

There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Water Supply - Operations Division in Ka'u. (Geographic District IV - Ka'u).

Special Working Conditions : Applicants must be available for stand-by duty, be able to respond to emergency calls during non-working hours, and must reside within the geographic district employed in when on stand-by duty. Must be able to work overtime as needed.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of Duties

  • Assists tradespersons in waterworks projects.
  • Uses pneumatic tool in the breaking of pavements, digging, and backfilling.
  • Assists in pipeline work.
  • Taps mains.
  • Flushes and cleans mains, reservoirs, and tanks.
  • Substitutes as water plant operator for short periods.
  • Repairs or replaces fence posts and fence wires.
  • Cleans, repairs, and maintains intake pipes and flumes.
  • Checks water levels in tanks or reservoirs.
  • Opens and closes reservoir valves.
  • Performs minor repairs to equipment and water meters.
  • Installs meter boxes.
  • May read water meters.
  • Clears surroundings, trails, ditches, and other access ways to water supply structures.
  • Drives a light truck.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience : A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to :

  • completion of the eighth grade, and
  • one (1) year of experience in work involving assisting in the repair and maintenance of mechanical instruments or equipment, and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or any other comparable driver's license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire.)
  • Examination : All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

    Ability to : perform mechanical work; determine repair, maintenance, and cleaning needs in watershed reservation or waterworks areas; understand and follow oral instructions.
