What are the responsibilities and job description for the Certified & Layout Welder position at Hawaii Gas?
Overview
Works under general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor and Plant Engineer from written/verbal orders following specific policies/procedures/methods and performs as a hands-on foreman/lead worker in high grade welding of a complex/difficult/diverse nature on structures, tanks, pressure vessels, pipelines and a variety of equipment and machines.
Responsibilities
Reads/studies/interprets certified welding codes/standards/manuals in compliance with ASME, API, and AWS codes and/or works from building plans/sketches/blue-prints to plan/layout/assign/coordinate are/gas welding on pressurized piping and pressure vessels/construction projects and/or equipment maintenance and/or repair jobs.
Makes/performs time/material/tool/cost estimates to determine work lay-out/procedure, requisitions stock, supplies/hand tools/power equipment required and prepares/maintains pertinent logs/records necessary and/or required.
Performs all of the more complex/difficult/diverse arc, gas, Tig, Mig welding tasks to meet the demanding certification standard for pressure pipes/tanks/vessels and a variety of structures, machines and equipment.
Performs a wide range of tasks in capital construction, maintenance and repair utilizing all of
the building and construction trade/craft industry classification skills.
Instructs/teaches lesser grade personnel in pressure vessel arc/gas welding and/or welding, cutting, brazing, soldering and burning on all types of surfaces using a variety of steel and/or alloys and inspects all in-progress/completed work carefully.
Performs all the job duties of lesser grade personnel in the Construction Unit.
Instructs lesser grade personnel or cross-functional workgroups to perform housekeeping duties to maintain all work areas/job sites/tools/vehicles/machines in clean/operating condition and inspects same.
Plans, leads, mentors all personnel in job sites/work areas/project areas to assure proper safety signs/warning devices are working correctly and/or in place according to safety rules/standards and all personnel wear/use prescribed safety equipment/clothing as required/directed.
Drives specialized vehicles (e.g. forklift, man lift) with the exception of cranes, as assigned and qualified.
Performs related work as directed/required.

Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Education and/or Work Experience:
High school graduate or GED.
High school or vocational school training in welding.
High school or vocational course work in shop mathematics, mechanical drawing, blueprint reading, physics, and chemistry are also helpful.
At least six years of practical experience through a combination of successful completion of an apprenticeship training program and responsible trade work under the direct supervision of a qualified master.
Demonstrated ability to direct and coordinate the work of others in a harmonious fashion, and to plan and skillfully lay out work.
Qualified in all phases of the work described.
Possesses a very good knowledge of all pertinent codes, regulations, standards, and safety rules, in addition to standard practices.
Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:
Valid Driver’s License Type 3.
