This position is located in the Nursing Administration section of Ka'u Hospital, a critical access hospital with 20 beds in the community of Pahala, Hawaii.
The function of this administrative position is to manage the daily operations by developing and implementing short and long term strategic planning to carry out the objectives of caring for the sick and injured, promoting ongoing education and knowledge for staff, promoting community health, and representing the hospital in the community.
The Director of Nursing is a Registered Professional Nurse who is responsible for nursing leadership, planning, human resources management, quality of health care, the allocation of financial, physical, and human resources, compliance with regulatory and licensing requirements, promotion of the hospital, emergency planning and ongoing management of the hospital clinical operations. Nursing services include all nursing functions and nursing personnel. In addition to assisting the Hospital Administrator on a daily basis, this position assumes the administrative functions during his/her absence.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provides leadership and direction of hospital clinical operations to ensure compliance with established objectives, standards of nursing practice, and goals for quality care functions to remain in compliance with Medicare/Medicaid requirements.
2. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with Administrator, nursing leaders, and other department heads and subordinates.
3. Direct operations of assigned areas of the organization, ensuring the provision of high quality patient care in the most cost-effective manner.
4. Collaborates with the Medical Directors and Medical Staff regarding clinical aspects and regulatory requirements of patient /resident care.
5. Participates in facility-wide quality assurance performance improvement program and directs nursing department activities relative to quality control, risk management, in service/continuing education needs, infection control and employee health.
6. Investigates irregularities and policy violations and takes corrective action.
7. Balances multiple priorities simultaneously assuring timely and accurate completion while maintaining quality standards. Is viewed as a resource in the facility when dealing with issues of systems and resources and accomplishing tasks in the most efficient and effective way.
8. Analyzes and evaluates nursing and related services to improve the quality of patient care and plan for better utilization of staff time. Collects data and analyzes data to determine staffing patterns and overall nursing services staffing plans. Reviews work schedules, assignments, patient classifications, Nurse Managers reports daily to assess the appropriate number and level of personnel needed to provide quality care.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Nursing Degree required; Preferred: Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health or Healthcare Administration
Experience: Seven (7) or more years of nursing experience with sufficient previous nursing administration experience in a hospital or clinic environment. A minimum of two (2) years of experience must be in a leadership position.
Certification: Certification in Advanced Nursing Administration is highly desirable.
Licensure: Possession of a license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawaii at the time of hire.
Supervises: This position is responsible for supervising the RPN IVs, RPN IIIs, Certified Nurse Aides, Licensed Practical Nurses, and clerical support staff.
Desired Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of nursing and health care practices and techniques must be demonstrated. Strong background in interpersonal communication, quality improvement activity, team building, strategic planning, and fiscal responsibility. Must demonstrate the ability to handle changing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
