The Adult Literacy EH Coordinator is a part-time position working closely with the O’ahubased Program Manager, Kona Coordinator and trained volunteers to provide high-quality literacy services for adults seeking to improve reading and writing skills. With training and support from the Program Manager and Kona Coordinator, the EH Coordinator will recruit, assess, and match adult students to work 1-to-1 with certified volunteer tutors. The Coordinator will be responsible for keeping accurate records of student attendance and progress in meeting literacy goals and for providing help to current and new tutor-student pairs. The Coordinator will also be asked to attend occasional community events and participate in outreach and volunteer recruitment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Adult Literacy EH Coordinator will work with the Program Manager, Kona Coordinator and volunteers to ensure services meet program goals and increase literacy. The Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Recruiting volunteers in EH, Pahoa in particular, who are interested in helping an adult improve reading.
  • Actively recruiting new adult students through community partnerships, networks, and outreach efforts.
  • Meeting with and assessing all new or returning students to understand goals and current skills and match them as soon as possible from the pool of available tutors.
  • Maintaining detailed and accurate records (in Google Suite) of various information relating to tutors and students.
  • Making regular contact via email, phone or in-person with students and tutors to help increase student success.
  • Assisting with PR and marketing specific to the EH/Pahoa, and coordinating quarterly tutor gatherings.

We are seeking a caring and organized person who is willing and able to manage the many tasks needed to provide literacy support that will truly help adults learn to read and write and benefit them in their lives. Qualifications include, but are not limited to:

  • Availability for a regular weekly schedule of part-time hours, as well as the flexibility to adapt to meet program needs, a willingness to work some weekend hours, and the ability to travel to meet students in pre-designated areas of EH, Pahoa in particular.
  • Positive communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Professional work experience working in literacy, adult education, workforce education, teaching role, or in a social services setting. A college degree is desired, but significant relevant experience is most highly valued.
  • Knowledge of the communities in East Hawaii, varied cultures, and the ability to offer relevant outreach, training, and inspiration for adult learners.
  • Ability to conduct training or information sessions to small groups.
  • Experience with recruiting and managing volunteers is desired.
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills, including Google suite.
  • Strong compassion and commitment to helping clientele and to maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to pick up boxes of books and move supplies and equipment, which can be up to 30lbs, for occasional outreach events.
