Job Summary
Responsible for acting as counsel to the company by providing proactive, easy to understand, and strategic legal advice and guidance on a range of complex issues. Primary duties will include understanding the business operations and needs and goals of your assigned business areas to help them find innovative solutions, improve efficiencies, better align with corporate goals, and achieve their goals in a way that mitigates risk. You are authorized to represent HMSA with members, providers, employers, and government agencies regarding legal matters that impact HMSA.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Legal advice
- Develop an expert understanding of areas of law impacting key business areas and keep business partners apprised of new laws and their implications.
- Research and interpret applicable statutes, rules, regulations and case law, as necessary.
- Assess situations with potential legal impact by taking a proactive approach to understanding business needs and advise key business leaders on effective strategic approaches that minimize legal risk. Ensure that communications take into account legal and business factors and are clear, easy to understand and actionable.
- Draft and negotiate contracts and handle legal disputes on behalf of HMSA, as necessary.
- Business partnership
- Engage with key business areas to understand their operations, goals and needs. Maintain trusting and respectful relationships with them and be seen as a consultant on both legal and non-legal issues.
- Identify opportunities for improvement and collaboration between departments, bring people together to address and come to mutually beneficial solutions.
- Lead resolution of complex legal and business issues by bringing people together and taking leadership of the issue.
- Partner with other attorneys and staff in Legal Affairs on cross-functional matters and matters that require assistance.

Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Five years of broad-based legal experience with a prominent law firm, company, or government, or equivalent experience
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- License to practice law in Hawaii or must obtain license within one year of hire in order to continue employment.
Salary : $119,000 - $151,000
