Job Summary

As the Controller for Hawaii Petroleum, you are responsible for all financial areas of the organization including proper recording, management and representation of the Company’s finances. This position serves as an officer of Hawaii Petroleum, LLC.

In this role, you are expected to oversee financial analysis, operations and support for the entire organization including leading all financial plans and policy maintenance, accounting principles and integrity of the company, and the safeguarding of all monetary and otherwise financial assets.

Leading a team of Accountants of various abilities, the Controller provides leadership and supervision of all financially related activities in the company including the development and implementation of systems both physical and electronically. The Controller works closely with senior leadership to provide insightful analysis of financial data to support decision-making. This role also requires serving as an officer of the Company as well as a liaison for corporate representation. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and a deep understanding of financial management principles.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee the monthly accounting processes including close and consolidation processes ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Direct the companywide accounting function including credit, collections, billing, cash applications, accounts payable, indirect taxes, payroll, inventory and fixed assets, providing exemplary service to the operating businesses, customers and vendors.
  • Oversee annual audit process and financial statement preparation and implement, modify, and monitor internal controls to ensure accurate financial reporting, proper safeguarding of company assets and compliance with all company accounting and reporting policies.
  • Oversee implementation of major financial systems improvements, supervise and review financial report preparation. Act as primary financial liaison with corporate entities, including Saltchuk and North Star Petroleum.
  • Oversee the completion and observation of the organizational annual budget, controlling costs effectively with maximizing revenue opportunities.
  • Oversee internal control processes to ensure the integrity of financial reporting and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain up to date accounting knowledge and skills using industry updates and standards and communicating newly acquired knowledge with team members where appropriate.
  • Identify developmental needs of accounting team members and coaching/mentoring to improve knowledge and skills and overall team development.
  • Using relevant information and individual judgement, ensure events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards and make changes/updates when necessary.
  • Oversee any and all financial planning and implementation of outlined organizational projects through budgeting, assigning department team members, sourcing suppliers and planning the project from inception to completion from a financial standpoint.
  • Drive productivity improvements throughout the accounting organization and increase organizational capability through training and development of both accounting and shared service personnel.
  • Develop and execute any required accounting process improvement roadmaps for Hawaii Petroleum.
  • Provide leadership throughout the organization on accounting policy development and implementation.
  • Manage all Hawaii Petroleum, LLC companies’ financial accounts and treasury services.
  • Analyzing information and evaluation results to choose the best solution and solve problems
  • Provides financial modeling as required and review business development pro-Formas.
  • Provide compliance and information reporting for income taxes, general excise taxes, fuel taxes and payroll taxes. Conduct internal compliance audits for all accounting related practices.
  • Develop and maintain internal control polices, guidelines, and procedures for activities to ensure compliance with internal and external audits. 
  • Act as the primary liaison for all financial matters such as annual audits with corporate auditors and any other third-party group.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications


General Requirements

The most suitable candidate for this role should possess,

  • A bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting/ business as well as a minimum of ten
    (10) years of professional experience in public accounting or a corporate accounting department in a leadership position. CPA preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and excellent attention to detail as well as strong ERP systems experience.
  • Experience implementing accounting systems and processers, scaling an accounting function, and driving continuous improvement processes.
  • Proven experience building, developing and mentoring a diverse accounting team of varying skills and abilities in related projects and functions.
  • Knowledge of, and the ability to address all areas of legal requirements for both State and Federal financial compliance.
  • The ability to utilize a wide range of computer systems for work purposes such as the entire MS Office suite and SharePoint but also Accounting software systems such as (but not limited to) PDI and DM2.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in person and through secondary communication such as email, phone or other two-way interface systems. 
  • The ability to communicate information between employees of all levels within the organization up to and including senior leadership officials and corporate officials. 
  • The ability to provide professional analysis of financial data to support organizational financial decision-making.
  • The ability to evaluate all areas of company operations and make financially related recommendations to streamline and improve efficiency.
  • A professional understanding of financial reporting is mandatory including the ability to accurately create as well as interpret existing reports to be distributed within the Company and to corporate leadership.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects both independently and as part of a larger team.
  • Lead the Accounting department in all areas of scheduled reconciliation including monthly ending of financial records, completion of annual budgets for all departments within the company.
  • A valid Type 3 Driver's License is required including reliable transportation for possible field work.
