Aircraft Mechanic Apprenticeship Program Overview

Hawaiian Airlines – in partnership with the University of Hawai‘i Honolulu Community College’s Aeronautics Maintenance Technology program, U.S. Department of Labor/Veterans’ Employment & Training Service, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) – has created the Aircraft Mechanic Apprenticeship Program (AMAP) to provide qualified individuals with valuable, supervised, on-the-job experience while working toward their A&P (Airframe & Powerplant) license.

AMAP provides valuable on-the-job training, acclimation and career opportunities at Hawaiian Airlines to individuals who are enrolled in an accredited A&P school, as well as former military personnel who are in the process of obtaining their A&P license.

Upon successful completion of the program and obtaining an A&P license, apprentices will be employed by Hawaiian Airlines as full-time aircraft mechanics.

Travel to/from the interviews and any subsequent relocation expenses are the responsibility of the candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for Base maintenance work under the supervision of a lead mechanic
  • Responsible for accomplishing assigned maintenance, preventative maintenance and repair work on Hawaiian Airlines aircraft
  • Ability to perform hands on tasks using tools or test equipment while under the oversight of the assigned lead mechanic
  • Ensures all safety and accident prevention measures are adhered to and corrective action taken as warranted
  • Must sign for any work performed that is legally allowed per the Federal Aviation Regulation

Pay and Benefits

The pay rate for this position is $28.85/hr. Medical, dental and vision benefits are provided in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

***DOT Regulation, 14 CFR Part 120 Subpart E 120.105-120.109 identifies this position as performing safety sensitive functions. Prior to any offer of employment or transfer into this position you will be required to submit to a DOT Pre-employment drug test for evidence of Marijuana, Cocaine, Opiates, Phencyclidine (PCP), and Amphetamines or a metabolite of those drugs

Minimum Requirements

  • Must obtain A&P license within 18 months for students currently enrolled in an accredited school OR within 6 months for those with prior experience but not enrolled in a school program
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited FAA A&P school licensing program for a minimum of six months and must maintain a 2.0 GPA while enrolled in an accredited school
  • In lieu of school, must have a minimum of 30 months of experience concurrently performing airframe & powerplant duties and must have an FAA issued authorization slip (FAA Form 8610-2) to take the written test
  • Must be able to work the following shifts: Fri-Tue: 1500 – 1900 OR Fri-Tue: 1930 – 2330. Shifts may change based on business needs
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must have all tools from the Hawaiian Airlines required tool list
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent

 **Hawaiian Airlines is regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT - regulation, 49 CFR part 40) and all applicants are advised that post-offer and/or pre-employment drug testing will be conducted to determine the presence of Marijuana, Cocaine, Opioids, PCP (Phencyclidine), and Amphetamine prior to any offer of employment or transfer into a safety-sensitive position.  Failure to submit to testing or positive indications of drug use will render the applicant ineligible for employment with Hawaiian Airlines and any employment offer will be withdrawn.

*** In addition to routine employment eligibility verification, U.S.-based airlines must gather information to validate country of citizenship and country of birth. Upon hire, you must provide documentation proving your current country of citizenship and birthplace.

****Must be legally authorized to work in the United States, for any employer, without sponsorship. Hawaiian Airlines will not sponsor applicants for nonimmigrant or immigrant employment visas or status for this position.
