What are the responsibilities and job description for the QUALITY CONTROL TECH position at Hawaiian Cement?
A Quality Control Technician will safely collect samples, perform QA tests, and report conformance of aggregates, cements, cementitious materials and concrete products to specifications / standards.
Minimum Requirements
- General education including: arithmetic, grammar, computer and lab science (high school graduate or GED equivalent with biology, chemistry and/or physics).
- Valid Hawaii State driver’s license.
- Maintain proper certifications, licensure and acceptable driving record (where applicable)
- Able to operate testing machines and equipment.
- High ethical and moral standards.
Preferred Requirements
- 3 years experience in all aspects of testing in the general construction industry
Duties and/or Responsibilities
- Safely collect material samples (aggregate, cement / cementitious and concrete products).
- Perform tests on construction materials in accordance with ASTM or AASHTO methods.
- Record and evaluate test data to determine material compliance with specifications and report the test results to appropriate stakeholders.
- Perform daily housekeeping / maintain laboratory and equipment.
- Perform concrete trial batches.
- Acquire ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade 1 certification within 1 year.
- Assist QC departments with bids and submittals.
- Provide field supervision / expedite on large or critical concrete pours.
- Assist with investigation of customer complaints about Hawaiian Cement products and service.
- Perform other duties as required.

- Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
- Assist in marketing and sales efforts of all Hawaiian Cement Divisions and KRC affiliates.
- Assist with CCPI / ACI Concrete Field Test Technician – Grade 1 testing.
- Assist with research, development and marketing of new mixes and products.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Work in a variety of environments from air-conditioned office / lab to hot/cold, dusty/muddy field conditions
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
- Will require climbing and descending ladders and stairs and withstand heights.
- Required lifting and carrying equipment and containers of material weighting 60 pounds.
- Must be able to use a wheelbarrow loaded with up to three cubic feet (450 pounds) of ready-mix concrete
- Operate aggregate, cement / cementitious and concrete testing equipment.
- Operate office equipment including calculators, computers with various software programs, printers and copiers.
- Able to work a flexible schedule (overtime and weekend) to accommodate operational requirements.
- Meet tight deadlines while maintaining quality results.
