JOB OVERVIEW:
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting functions necessary for the operations of Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc. This includes accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash management, fixed assets, payroll, tax and financial reporting, as well as general and sub-accounting ledgers. The Controller supervises the preparation of closing entries and various reports prepared by accountants and is responsible for the preparation of monthly and year-end financial closings and reports. This role also involves providing schedules and reports required by HDCC’s parent company.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop, implement, and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and control practices to:
- Ensure the integrity of financial information.
- Prevent fraud and/or misuse of company assets.
- Ensure HDCC adheres to current generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in accordance with corporate and national fiscal and financial policies.
- Direct supervision of HDCC accountants: plan, direct, and train the accounting team, answering technical and general work-related questions.
- Collaborate with the Accounting staff and Systems Analysts on computer applications.
- Assist the Vice President of Finance in the development and preparation of operating budgets and business plans.
- Work with various levels of management, construction managers, project engineers, and cost engineers on finance and accounting-related technical matters.
- Assist customers, management, and auditors in reviewing HDCC records as needed, providing information and schedules to fulfill client, reporting, and regulatory obligations.
- Investigate the desirability of procedural changes and initiate such changes as required.
- Perform daily, monthly, and annual cash flow management.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Finance.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA in Accounting or Finance.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in progressively responsible accounting or finance-related positions within a large, structured corporate environment.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in management.
- Construction industry experience preferred.
- CPA preferred.
- Strong management skills with the ability to organize, plan, direct, and train a large staff.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
- Comprehensive knowledge of accounting, budgeting, planning, financial analysis, and tax laws.
