JOB/POSITION TITLE: Assistant Veterinary Services Manager
STATUS: Non-Exempt
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Directly lead and provide oversight for the work of the Veterinary Services team, volunteers and overall day-to-day operations
Reports To: Manager, Veterinary Services
Supervises: Veterinary Services, related volunteers
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:
- Daily Intradepartmental Responsibilities and Staff Management. Participates in daily direct medical needs of animals including physical exams, euthanasia, and surgery. Assists the Veterinary Services Manager in the day-to-day department staff supervision including hiring, training, scheduling and development to ensure highest standard of performance and professionalism in animal care, customer service, cleanliness, and animal handling. Works with the Veterinary Services Manager to ensure compliance with policies and protocols for all department operations. Assists with department staff trainings including work site safety compliance to ensure that safety procedures are being followed and OSHA standards are met at all times.
- Volunteer Supervision and Engagement. Assists Veterinary Services Manager in the training and supervising of department volunteers in conjunction with the Volunteer Services Department. Ensures all volunteer polices are adhered to and best practices are being followed.
- People and Animal Care Collaborate with Team Leads throughout the organization to address logistical issues related to flow, space, scheduling, staff absences and other shelter concerns. Effectively communicate and elevate challenges to management team as needed. Approach challenging situations with a positive perspective, helpful attitude and flexible strategies, seeking the best possible experiences and outcomes for pets and patrons.
- Organizational Improvement and Professional Development. Utilize established SOPs to guide consistent and appropriate operating procedures. Provide productive feedback on implementation and potential challenges to be experienced by the team, propose edits as needed. Provide information and data to assist with development and management of budget.
TEAM SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES, VETERINARY SERVICES:
- Work alongside the veterinary services team, providing support and guidance in the moment on all aspects of their work.
- Counsel and support staff in regard to their day to day work and provide input to managers regarding staff performance.
- Coordinate daily workflow of animals through the department, including emergent needs.
- Ensure efficiency and coverage all department needs, including impactful oversight of morning round-up meetings.
- Monitor care and treatment of animals to ensure proper services and follow-up care are provided and completed efficiently.
- Perform euthanasia and other related tasks, as well as train others to do so.
- Provide first line of exceptional customer service to all patrons
JOB CONDITIONS:
- Work Environment: Indoors and outdoors as needed.
- Equipment Use: Computer, database and telephone systems. Use of all sheltering- related animal equipment including tools for containing animals humanely, safely and securely.
- Hours: Based on operational requirements. Must be available full-time and available to work over 40 hours, as needed, any 7 days of the week, weekends and holidays.

- Must have passion and concern for both animals and people.
- Must agree with and be committed to Hawaiian Humane Society goals, objectives, and programs.
- Requires working with minimal supervision. Must be self-motivated.
- Requires alertness and attention to detail in handling of animals.
- Requires crawling, bending, lifting, running, etc. in cleaning and handling of animals.
- Requires lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. of weight, struggling or limp. Must have no limitations to prevent handling or working with animals.
- Requires eye-hand coordination in handling, capturing, transporting, restraining or administering veterinary treatment to a live animal.
- Must have ability to handle telephone/email operation and etiquette.
- Requires clear and legible writing skills.
- Requires knowledge of computer input functions and report writing.
- Requires knowledge of and ability to perform veterinary technical support procedures to all types of animals.
- Requires knowledge of common diseases and medical conditions affecting all types of animals.
- Requires patience and tact when dealing with difficult, emotional, or angry people.
- Must communicate clearly while talking to individual people either in person on the telephone, or over the intercom system.
- Understanding, compassion, and ability to perform euthanasia on all types of animals.
- Requires handling people and animals in a pleasant, courteous, and professional.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Skills/Knowledge: General handling and knowledge of variety of animal species, behaviors, general physical needs, common diseases, and medical conditions. Computer literacy and knowledge of programs such as Microsoft Office. Ability to use data base style computer programs. Customer service skills including telephone operation and etiquette. Clear and legible writing skills. Ability to work under pressure and without direct supervision. Supervisory and management skills. Ability to collaborate and work well with other team members. Must agree with and be committed to Hawaiian Humane Society goals, objectives and programs.
- Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience: Two years working in a supervisory or large team setting in a veterinary or animal shelter environment preferred.
