TITLE: Custodian EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Principal or designee DEGREE REQUIRED: None DATE: October 2016 Purpose: To perform routine custodial duties at the school site during an assigned shift, and to maintain buildings and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly, safe and secure condition. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum carpets in classrooms, office and other work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets Clean classrooms, cafeterias, offices, libraries, kitchens, gymnasiums, hallways, lounges, locker rooms and other facilities as assigned; dust, sanitize and wipe down desks, tables, furniture, doors, countertops, equipment and woodwork; spot mop spills; remove gum, graffiti and debris as needed Pick up paper and other debris from school grounds, walkways and areas adjacent to school buildings; empty waste receptacles; replace trash liners Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; fill dispensers with paper towels, soap, toilet paper, seat covers and other items; clean mirrors, tile, walls, light fixtures and windows; unclog drains and toilets Move, adjust and arrange furniture in classrooms or for special events. Clean whiteboards as needed; empty pencil sharpeners; clean tables, chairs, benches and floors after breakfast, lunch and recess periods as assigned Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines, blowers, pressure washers and other equipment as assigned Lock and unlock doors, windows and gates as appropriate; set alarm systems as required; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; raise and lower flags as assigned Assist with minor grounds maintenance or general building maintenance, such as painting, as required; replace lights, adjust shades or blinds, adjust desks and other furniture Monitor inventory levels of custodial supplies; pick up and distribute a variety of classroom, office and custodial supplies as required Complete minor repairs as necessary Maintain punctual and consistent attendance Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications: Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above High school graduate preferred Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in modern custodial work Modern cleaning practices, including basic methods of cleaning floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures. Use cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner; observe health and safety regulations; proper lifting techniques. Understand and follow oral and written instructions in English. Meet schedules and timelines. Work cooperatively and collaboratively with staff, co-workers, teachers and administrators; work independently with limited direct supervision. Valid CPR test Ability to pass criminal background check TB test screening required Physical Demands: The Custodial is a physically demanding position. The incumbent must spend the entire time at work standing, walking, lifting heavy objects, operating medium weight cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, sweeping and mopping floors and moving desks and furniture. The incumbent is required to do a great deal of stretching and bending, often in awkward positions. Operating floor polishers and waxers are particularly hard on back muscles. May occasionally have to climb or balance on step-ladders. Work Environment: The Custodial works on a daily basis with dangerous and toxic cleaning products that can be very harmful to one’s health if not properly utilized. In some cases these products give off unpleasant odors. The Custodial also regularly has to clean up blood, saliva and other bodily fluids that are unpleasant to deal with. The condition of washrooms is often unpleasant.
