School Nurse LPN

The Hawthorne Cedar Knolls Union Free School District is a Special Act School District located in the suburban Westchester community of Hawthorne. We are a K-12 public school district that provides a safe and therapeutic environment for day students referred to us by their local Committee on Special Education. We serve students from Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties as well as the five boroughs of NYC. Our geographical location allows for convenient access for students from all over the Hudson Valley and the five boroughs of NYC. Our school district consists of two school buildings that serve students with disabilities.

The Nurse LPN provides basic healthcare services to students as needed. This individual is expected to consult with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students cope with medical and physical issues affecting their ability to perform.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The following activities are illustrative of the role of the Nurse LPN, to be performed under the supervision of the RN:

· Monitors basic health such as vital signs & overall condition of all students;

· Maintains all medical records in an up-to-date, orderly and confidential manner;

· Records students medical history & maintains documentation;

· Assists RN with tests & procedures as well as give updates on students’ medical status;

· Consults with RN on health care plans;

· Provide medical care as ordered by student’s physician;

· Familiarize themselves with doctor’s orders;

· Provides emergency assistance and first aid;

· Working with students with psychiatric issues as well as dealing in crisis intervention;

· Be compassionate and able to handle stress.

Qualifications:

The qualifications required are a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or successful completion of an LPN license program or proven experience as an LPN or similar role. Possession of a New York State LPN license is a must. Applicant should also have up-to-date First Aid and CPR certification. They should be flexible and willing to work in multiple buildings.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT IN SCHOOL DISTRICTS:

In accordance with the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) legislation, Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, candidates for appointment in school districts must obtain clearance for employment from the State Education Department prior to employment based upon a fingerprint and criminal history background check.

Salary is commensurate with experience.
