What are the responsibilities and job description for the Editorial Assistant position at Haymarket Books?
Haymarket Books is looking for a full-time editorial assistant to work in our Chicago office.
The editorial assistant will support the work of Haymarket's editorial board, including administrative tasks as well as frequent interaction with our authors and other departments. We consider the relationships we have with our authors as one of our highest priorities as a press, and this position supports our authors at every stage of the publishing process. We are looking for someone who is comfortable working closely with authors and colleagues, pays extreme attention to detail, can juggle multiple projects at the same time, and is looking for a collegial and political environment to contribute to a radical book publishing project.
The editorial assistant:
Provides administrative support to the editorial director and editorial board (scheduling, project management, fields questions from authors and agents, circulates agendas and notes for editorial board meetings)
Assists with various day-to-day tasks such as logging submissions, drafting contract and payment requests, and sales reports
Evaluates proposals and manuscripts and writes readers reports, or solicits external readers reports
Provides editorial support on projects by offering editorial feedback, liaising with authors, and writing jacket copy, title information sheets, and catalog copy
Supports select authors throughout the acquisition and production process through regular meetings and updates and liaising with other departments and editorial staff as needed
Copyedits and proofreads as needed
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree or commensurate experience/education in publishing or related industry. Publishing experience is a plus
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Acrobat, knowledge of InDesign a plus
Must have close familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed.
Must be committed to the mission of Haymarket's publishing project
Start date: ASAP
Salary: $45,000
Benefits: 100% of health insurance covered, 4 weeks paid vacation plus 16 holidays, 2 weeks paid sick leave, 12 weeks paid parental leave
Location: Remote until our office reopens in late 2021, then based in Chicago
