Description
SUMMARY:
Responsible for assisting a certified teacher in implementing a multi-sensory individualized educational plan (IEP) for each severely emotionally disturbed or learning disabled child in a self-contained classroom with six to ten students with special emphasis on maintenance of discipline and working one on one with students
JOB DUTIES:
- Meets with the teachers to review daily lesson plans and to contribute information and ideas as appropriate
- Works with students in a one on one situation to reinforce instruction and help them learn specific academic skills
- Works with students in small group learning situations as assigned
- Observes and controls behavior according to established procedures
- Reports progress regarding student behavior and performance to teacher
- Supervises students alone for short periods of time
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
In the course of performing this job, the incumbent typically spends time standing, walking on sloped/hilly areas of campus, carrying, driving, lifting (up to 40 pounds), listening, speaking, reaching, writing, and participating in restraint procedures.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 48 college units or successful completion of the Para Pro Test
- Working knowledge of child guidance principles and practices, basic academic subjects, including arithmetic, oral and written communication skills; safe practices in classroom activities, record-keeping techniques and health and safety regulations
- The ability to learn the special needs, problems and requirements of students; assist teachers with instruction and related activities of the assigned learning environment; and operate instructional equipment
- Basic skills in working with emotionally disturbed children or adolescents, typically learned in two years’ experience
- Ability to pass and utilize Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (T.C.I.) and C.P.I, as required
- Ability to pass and utilize First Aid and CPR Certification, as required
