Summary
Under general supervision, leads a crew of workers in performing a wide variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled road maintenance and construction duties for Hays County.
- Leads a crew of workers in performing a wide variety of road maintenance and construction duties.
- Plans tasks and organizes workers and equipment to complete projects on time and on budget.
- Keeps records on daily work of crew, including timesheets, assignments, work progress, and related information.
- Orders supplies.
- Notifies Road Supervisor of needs, special circumstances, and problems.
- Provides training and guidance to others.
- Assists Road Supervisor and acts as supervisor during absences.
- Some positions repair barricades.
- Blades and grades road bases and dirt roads to create or repair designated grades and crowns.
- Operates asphalt reclaimer and recycler to remove asphalt and/or cut ditches and grades.
- Applies asphalt and oil.
- Operates chip spreader; forming bridges and beams.
- Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on heavy equipment.
- Moves, loads, and hauls materials and debris.
- Installs traffic control signs.
- Cuts and installs culvert pipes.
- Builds forms, ties steel, pours and finishes concrete.
- Paves roads.
- Removes asphalt or concrete.
- Operates water trucks spraying and dumping water.
- Prepares sub grade material.
- Sands roads.
- Stakes job sites.
- Some positions oversee mowing crews.
- Clears brush, trims branches, and operates a chipper.
- Sets up road signs and barricades, flags and directs traffic.
- Fills potholes.
- Cleans offices, rest rooms, and equipment yard.
- Removes trash from roads and parks.
- Mows rights-of-way.
- Applies herbicides.
- Performing routine equipment maintenance, including checking and filling fluids.
- Shovels and spreads dirt and asphalt.
- Operates equipment such as graders, asphalt reclaimer/recyclers, rollers, dump trucks, tandem trucks, water trucks, broom trucks, pick-up trucks, backhoes, loaders, and tractor mowers.
- May transfer equipment between locations.
- May assist other County departments with labor tasks.
- May keep fuel logs or other records.
- Follows established safety procedures and guidelines.
- May respond to public inquiries at the job site concerning road maintenance and construction.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Four years general road maintenance and construction experience, including light and/or heavy equipment operation preferred, or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Class “A” Commercial Texas Driver’s License preferred.
- Class “B” Commercial Texas Driver’s License required.
- Employees must provide and wear lace up safety boots, as described in the Hays County Safety Boot Policy for Road and Bridge.
Salary : $48,697 - $50,158
