Job Title: Receiving Clerk

Department: Grocery

Reports to: Grocery Manager or Store Manager

Exempt Status: Non-exempt

JOB FUNCTION: To receive/check-in merchandise, assure that merchandise received matches invoice, and return damaged product for credit.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • To count and inspect merchandise and match to invoice.
  • To keep receiving area secure and damage reclaim area neat and organized.
  • To assure the safety of self, customers, and co-workers by understanding and practicing store safety rules and notifying a supervisor of any potential hazard immediately. Pick up/remove all broken containers, packing materials/boxes from the backroom floor.
  • To perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by supervisors and manager, substituting for absent workers, and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers during peak periods of business.
  • To understand the operation, safety requirements and restraints of a baler, case cutter, electric pallet jack and forklift (must be 18 years or older to operate the electric pallet jack, forklift and baler).
  • To use stacking techniques that will prevent damage to product.
  • To remove trash from area and operate the baler.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to count.
  • Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/vendors concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
  • A stable work and educational history.
  • The ability to read and write English. The able to read instructions, merchandise labels, warehouse order codes, invoices, printed paper and forms.
  • Make judgments concerning receiving, inspection of merchandise as to the extent of unsalable product damage, and the placement of case/pallets in storage and overhead racks.
  • Able to move and stack product so that it will not be damaged.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in a related type of job.
  • Prior experience operating a baler, case cutter, pallet jack and forklift. (Must be 18 years or older to operate pallet jacks, baler, and forklift.)

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in circumstances where only limited standardization may exist.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in diagram, oral, schedule, or written forms.

OTHER SKILLS OR REQUIREMENTS:

  • Perform maintenance and sanitation functions.
  • See cases, vendors, case strips, invoices, computerized receiving displays, product size/description, labels on products, stocking carts, debris on floor, and signs.
  • Perceive color difference on product labels.
  • Recognize cleaning/maintenance equipment, pallet jacks, forklifts, computerized receiving displays, and baler controls.
  • Respond to intercom.
  • Respond to co-workers’ questions.
  • Respond to vendor/driver questions/comments.
  • Respond to the sound of baler/pallet jack/forklift/cleaning equipment operation.
  • Communicate with vendors/drivers.
  • Use the intercom system.
  • Communicate with co-workers.
  • Read case labels/strips, signs, tags, shelf signs, numbers, and aisle markers.
  • Read equipment and chemical warning labels.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands described below are representative of those that are required by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Mobility:
  • To move cases from truck/pallet to backroom for storage, approximately 50 yards.
  • To stack cases on floor/skid/rack/shelf.
  • To move cardboard/packing material to the baler, approximately 50 yards.
  • To move excess cases/damaged product from damage storage area to the truck, approximately 50 yards.
  • To move through the entire backroom of the store for supplies/product/ maintenance equipment and return, approximately 75 yards.
  • Move cardboard into baler, approximately 4 feet. (Must be 18 years or older to move cardboard into baler.)
  • Pick up/move/sort/ (a/an) case/item/trash/from floor/shelf/ ground/pallet/rack storage.
  • Use maintenance and product transportation equipment.
  • Reach forward/down up to 36 inches to attain merchandise on stocking cart or pallets.
  • Reach forward/down up to 36 inches to clean backroom shelves/floor area or control maintenance/stocking equipment.
  • Reach forward/down/up to 36 inches to place cases on floor/shelving.
  • Handle labels/signs/tags.
  • Handle case cutter/utility knife.
  • Grasp and handle wet/cold/hot/crushable/metal/paper/plastic store products.
  • Handle cardboard/packaging and debris.
  • Manipulate maintenance equipment handles/grasps/knobs.
  • Twist at the waist while cleaning, sorting, load/unloading, moving/removing merchandise, stocking merchandise and cleaning work area.
  • Kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, bend at the waist/knees to count and physically touch merchandise
  • Pick up cardboard, packaging, and debris from floor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Inside and outside work with extreme variations in heat/cold/ dust/humidity.
