Job Summary And Qualifications
The Lead Surgical Technologist delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing various functions to support the efficient operation of the surgical suite. Under the supervision of the Circulating RN, the Lead Surgical Technologist prepares the surgical suite, positions and prepares the patient, and provides instruments, equipment, and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure. The Lead Surgical Technologist ensures a sterile field, proper instrument counts, and proper operation of instruments and equipment. The Lead Surgical Technologist participates in patient-specific care as directed and follows service excellence standards to promote optimum patient satisfaction. In addition, the Lead Surgical Technologist assists with ongoing training and/or precepting of new and current employees as directed by the supervisor. The Lead Surgical Technologist is responsible for ensuring new processes, equipment and other changes are communicated and/or taught to other Surgical Technologists.
Organizes the operating suite with instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for the day. Reviews daily cases to ensure adequate stocking. Ensures proper functioning of equipment/instruments prior to procedures.
Creates and maintains an orderly sterile instrument table. Utilizes physician preference cards for efficient setup.
Prepares for emergency and add on cases rapidly and effectively.
Transports patients to and from surgical suite as needed.
Assists in the transfer, positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for surgical procedures in accordance with hospital standards.
Performs and/or assists in scrub/gown/glove process for self and team.
Assists the surgeon during each procedure by passing requested/required equipment, instruments, medications, sponges, sutures, etc.. Performs other duties as instructed, such as holding retractors and cutting sutures.
Anticipates situations and functions with a proactive awareness to help the surgical team maintain attention on the operative field.
Monitors the patient and any equipment in use to identify issues requiring immediate action. Reports and/or responds calmly and efficiently.
Assists in the maintenance and care of surgical specimens. Handles surgical specimens according to hospital policy.
Follows department procedures for proper procurement, labeling, and handling of medications, I.V. fluids, and irrigating fluids in the surgical services area.
Operates specialty equipment per manufacturer’s recommendations and policy/procedures.
Completes all sponge, sharp, and instrument counts and reports all discrepancies to the nurse or surgeon.
Performs thorough, prompt room turnover between procedures, including cleaning, restocking of supplies, and setup/cleaning/removal of equipment and instrumentation as needed.
Participates in patient and procedural verification.
Responds to lifesaving situations, including fire and disaster situations.
Responds promptly to on-call situations as scheduled.
Helps maintain a safe, organized environment for personnel and patients. Demonstrates commitment to patient safety initiatives including patient falls and restraints.
Ensures patient privacy and comfort. Maintains confidentiality of patient information and records, and advocates for patient rights as needed.
Applies the principles of asepsis to ensure the prevention of infection and maintain optimum patient care. Follows universal precautions as required by hospital and OSHA policies.
Demonstrates effective communication skills when interacting with patients, family members, physicians, and co-workers. Utilizes appropriate chains of command to communicate pertinent information.
Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system. Uses system to report potential patient safety issues.
Maintains knowledge of surgical specialties and ability to scrub for multiple types of procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of procedure-related anatomy and physiology.
Contributes to performance improvement initiatives and works toward meeting and exceeding core measures, patient safety, and service excellence goals.
Participates in the peer interview process for candidates for hire.
Assists in employee orientation, training, education programs, performance improvement, and quality control activities and initiatives.
Serves as a positive role model and resource for peers. Shares knowledge with team members and ensures new processes, equipment, policies/procedures, etc. are communicated to the team promptly.
Assists in the hiring process by participating in the peer interview process.
Develops orientation manual and assists with orientation of new personnel. Serves as a positive role model and resource for peers.
Meets with new hire Surgical Techs at hospital-wide orientation. Precepts all new Surgical Techs to ensure unit expectations and standards are known and followed.
Ensures new processes, equipment, policies/procedures, etc. are communicated to Surgical Techs promptly.
Leads by example as reflected in positive feedback from patients and staff.
Performs other duties as assigned.

- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
- Registered Surgical Technologist through DORA
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
- Vocational training program in Surgical Technology preferred
