Job Summary and Qualifications:
Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, Laboratory Supervisor and the Departmental Lead Technologists, the Laboratory Assistant performs clerical and administrative tasks including but not limited to faxing, copying, answering phones, taking messages and filing. The Laboratory Assistant will process all specimens received in lab within established turnaround times. Will receive specimens using the Meditech system, process and distribute patient specimens to appropriate laboratory sections for testing. Must be knowledgeable with testing collection requirements and have the ability to perform basic waived testing (i.e. urine pregnancy testing dipstick testing, kit testing) as defined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA). The Laboratory Assistant must have the ability to multi-task, receive and distribute supplies, maintain supply inventory for his/her area. The Laboratory Assistant will be in constant contact with patients, nurses, physicians and laboratory staff to resolve patient care issues that pertain to laboratory testing. Position requires strong interpersonal skills effectively interact with a wide variety of hospital personnel, patients and guests. Will act as a dispatcher for phlebotomy staff, ensuring pending issues are resolved in a timely manner. Process PKU’s for send out to the Texas Department of State Health Services within established turnaround times. Will perform tasks as assigned by the Laboratory Director and Laboratory Supervisor within scope of training.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education and Training
High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum Work Experience
One year experience in a clinical setting
Skills
Proficient at processing laboratory specimens
Excellent email and phone etiquette
Good manual dexterity.
