What are the responsibilities and job description for the Phlebotomist position at HCA Solutions?
HCA Solutions is currently seeking qualified Phlebotomists for Central Texas Veterans Health Care Services in Temple, TX.
Phlebotomy services shall be provided 40 hours per week, shifts to be covered maybe any of the following but not limited to:
- 7am-3:30pm (with 30-minute lunch break)
- 4am- 12:45pm; 6am-2:45pm; or 7:30am – 4:15pm (with 45 min lunch)
- 4:00pm – midnight
- midnight – 8:00am
Services provided under this contract may be performed on site at any of the following locations depending on need:
- CTVHCS at Olin E. Teague VA Medical Center 1901 Veterans Memorial
- Drive Temple, TX 76505
- Doris Miller VA Medical Center 4800 Memorial Drive Waco, TX
Travel may be occasionally required between the CTVHCS Temple Campus, the Doris Miller VAMC, Waco, based on staffing and patient need.
PHLEBOTOMIST DUTIES:
- Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture) and urine specimen collection on patients
- Ensures proper identification of patients.
- Uses knowledge of human anatomy, aseptic technique, and phlebotomy material selection (i.e. vacutainer, syringe, butterfly).
- Uses judgment in selection of phlebotomy site based upon the patient's condition, age group, and type of test to be performed.
- Prepares phlebotomy site for proper specimen collection, based upon knowledge of blood specimen types, request forms, anticoagulants and transport conditions testing procedures.
- Conveys to the patient the intention of performing a phlebotomy while showing understanding and empathy for the patient's condition.
- Performs glucose tolerance testing by administering pretest substances and drawing blood at specific time intervals.
- Contacts Medical Staff in handling patients in cases of fainting, convulsions, and illness.
- Follows universal precautions, and infection prevention and control guidelines in the performance of all procedures, wears task appropriate PPE, disposes of needles and contaminated waste, and patient isolation requirements in the performance of all procedures.
- Follows proper procedures in the storage and disposal of needles and syringes.
- Assists in disinfecting and closing the Phlebotomy Room at the end of the shift
- Performs processing procedures
- Proper centrifugation of specimens
- Aliquot specimens
- Unpack/pack, track, distribute specimens to appropriate sections
- Receives specimens and accompanying request forms for any of the tests that can be performed and checks each for proper identification.
- Accessions orders by use of computer system.
- Clearly labels specimens after drawing with patient's name, identification number (SSN), phlebotomist's initials, collection time, and date as required.
- Files results of completed laboratory tests.
- Maintains adequate stock of supplies. Rotates stock as needed to ensure supplies are used according to expiration dates.
Miscellaneous Duties
- Occasionally serves as receptionist at the laboratory front desk, greeting and processing patient lab orders, providing patients with appropriate guidance, answering nontechnical inquiries, and referring technical inquiries to the appropriate laboratory staff member.
- Assists the receptionist in accessioning patients and in providing instructions to patients for testing (i.e. clean catch urines, GTT's, 24-hour urines, etc.)
Physical Demands
- Will be required to wear a Contained Air Purifying Respirator (CAPR) for respiratory isolation contact when working on the COVID wards.
- Work requires extended periods of staying in one position, sitting or standing, some light (less than 40 pounds) lifting.
- Attention to detail and concentration when verifying patient identification and test request data, and when accessioning and labeling specimens. This may be intermittent with periods requiring physical activity such as walking moderate distances.
Education and Experience
- The candidate shall have valid certification/license to practice in the state of the facility as a Phlebotomist.
- The candidate must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified, in accordance with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- The candidate must provide proof of experience with specimen collection, packaging and shipment to referral laboratories with knowledge of maintaining appropriate records on their resume.
- The candidate shall complete mandatory training as required by the institution and health services department.
- Must be willing to work any shift
- Must provide a current, detailed resume to include at least three (3) professional references
