Job Description:
High Country News is hiring a Design Director to lead the visual team in creating journalism that reflects the complexity and diversity of the West. The ideal candidate has strong design and project management skills, a deep understanding of journalism, and strategic expertise across all platforms.
The Design Director will oversee the design of all HCN products, ensuring consistency with the organization's brand. They will hire, guide, and mentor a talented Art Department team, fostering a positive work environment and creating a culture of high performance.
The role involves overseeing relationships with external contractors, designing and producing digital products, leading print editions, championing user-experience strategies, and building annual and monthly art calendars.
The ideal candidate has a bachelor's or graduate degree in journalism, graphic design, or visual communication, and substantive experience with editorial, marketing, and fundraising design and production across platforms.
They must have excellent skills in Adobe suites software, Tableau, Excel, WordPress, and email marketing software. Experience with Newspack software is ideal.
This is a full-time, exempt position with employer-funded medical, dental, and vision healthcare benefits. The salary range is $78,195 to $86,884 annually, dependent on skills and experience.
