General Statement of Duties
The employee in this classification is responsible for facilitating and supervising the safe and efficient operation of the pupil transportation program for an assigned area.
Essential Duties
- Participates in planning and directing the daily activities of the pupil transportation program
- Supervises all employees within an assigned transportation area within the Department
- Conducts in-service safety training for drivers and assistants
- Ensures that bus drivers adhere to planned maintenance schedules for school buses
- Responds to incidents and accidents
- Maintains computerized records and files related to the transportation program
- Retrieves and reviews video footage captured by the school bus digital video recorder
- Responds to concerns from schools, parents, patrons and other agencies or departments
- Conducts annual employee performance evaluations on all area administrative staff
- Evaluates bus stops and routes for safety and efficiency
- Evaluates and assigns school bus parking locations
- Monitors road and weather conditions before and during periods of inclement weather
- Performs inspection of school buses for cleanliness and proper equipment
- Performs on-the-road observations of school bus drivers and assistants, correcting and documenting any unsafe practices
- Effectively communicates with schools and other outside agencies on issues related to the transportation program
- Remains current on all local, state and federal regulations pertaining to the Pupil Transportation program
- Prepares reports as necessary
- Performs related work as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in the field of Pupil Transportation; minimum two years of supervisory experience; specialized knowledge of pupil transportation procedures and operations, considerable knowledge of automotive equipment and maintenance; knowledge of supervision of personnel and business management; considerable knowledge in effective public relations; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities; extensive knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to school bus operations; valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License with proper endorsements to operate a school bus; certification as a School Bus Driver Trainer in Virginia within one year of employment.
