Leadership
Creates an environment that is conducive to active and participatory learning, resource-based instructional practices, and collaboration with teaching staff
Volunteers to serve on school district staff committees and technology committees
Shares expertise by presenting at faculty meetings, parent meetings, and school board meetings
Encourages the use of instructional technology to engage students and to improve learning, providing 24 / 7 access to digital information resources for the entire learning community
Coordinates and runs annual book fairs and school wide literacy events
Takes an active role in school improvement
Remains current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to school library programs
Attends professional workshops and conferences
Selects, trains and monitors volunteer workers
Formulates and manages the library budget with guidance from an administrator
Instructional Partner
Works with teachers and other educators to build and strengthen connections between student information and research needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and information resources
Joins with teachers and others to plan and implement meaningful experiences that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning
Provides and plans professional development opportunities within the school and district for and with all staff
Promotes the use of books and instructional materials in relation to curriculum related activities by displays, book talks, television promotions, and articles
Information Specialist
Maintains the library, ordering books, materials and culling outdated materials, checks books in and out, shelves and mends books, files materials, catalogues the collection, conducts annual inventory
Creates and maintains an inviting, safe, and flexible school library conducive to teaching and learning
Organizes the collection of library materials and texts for maximum and effective use
Provides leadership and expertise in selection, acquisition, evaluation, and organization of information resources and technologies in all formats, as well as expertise in the ethical use of information
Teacher
Empowers students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, effective researchers, and ethical users of information
Teaches students in small and large groups
May be assigned to teach a study hall class during which assistance with classroom assignments is given

Physical Demands
The librarian spends much time walking, standing, bending and lifting to 20lbs. Sits when using the computer or performing paperwork, also using skills for manipulation of small objects and finger / hand movement (keyboard). Constant use of eye / hand coordination occurs.
Hearing / Vision / Speech and Language Processing
The librarian’s task requires hearing at close proximity and at a distance. Clarity of vision near and far is essential as well as three-dimensional vision. The librarian needs to communicate in an articulate manner, with auditory and visual comprehension. He / She must have telephone skills. Long and short-term memory must be present. Reading, writing, and calculating are essential.
Human Relation Characteristics
Tasks require interaction with students, co-workers and the public. The librarian needs to be a problem solver for all the tasks and is called on for independent decision making situations.
Environmental Conditions
The area is a temperate climactic zone, so no extreme weather conditions exist. Work is done indoors. Noise is at a quiet level most of the time. There are no unusual vibrations, hazards or pollutant atmospheric conditions noted.
Temperaments
The librarian performs many activities by him / herself. He / she must have the ability to direct others in planned activities. This leadership requires expressing personal ideas and feelings. There are repetitive tasks required in the library setting, but there are also a variety of duties the librarian must perform.
