Position Summary
We're seeking a Construction Materials Technician to join our Construction Administration Services team. In this role, you'll perform field and laboratory testing of construction materials such as concrete, aggregates, and asphalt pavement, ensuring compliance with standard testing procedures. Testing will be conducted at construction sites and in a controlled laboratory environment.
Under the guidance of a Construction Engineer, you'll perform materials testing, provide updates on test results, and coordinate upcoming testing activities. Projects are based in Southcentral and Southeast Alaska, but future assignments may take you to other regions of the state. This role often involves long hours, including night shifts, during the construction season.
Required Job Qualification:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- At least two years of experience in construction materials testing (soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt).
- WAQTC certification for construction materials testing.
- Knowledge of applicable specifications, test methods, and procedures.
- Familiarity with heavy civil construction and associated materials testing.
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and data entry software.
- Willingness and ability to travel to remote locations under adverse conditions, including via small aircraft or boat.
Desired Job Qualifications:
- Certificate or AAS in Civil Engineering or Construction Technology.
- Experience with Alaska DOT&PF construction projects.
- Certifications in AK-CESCL, OSHA, or NICET.
- Familiarity with FAA or FHWA construction projects.
- Experience with AASHTOWare, Bluebeam, or similar project management software.
- Background in construction inspection.
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform field and laboratory testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt mixtures in compliance with applicable standards.
- Prepare accurate test reports and communicate results to project teams.
- Track the frequency and location of testing to ensure compliance.
- Use judgment and independence to determine appropriate actions.
- Plan testing schedules with consideration for project timelines and sequences.
- Collaborate professionally with coworkers, clients, contractors, and the public.
- Support other technicians, inspectors, and engineers as needed.
- Take on additional duties as assigned.
Work Environment
This position involves field, laboratory, and office work. While working in the field, this position will involve working along or near busy roadways and in construction areas. This position may be required to lift up to 60 lbs. unassisted. This position includes work outside during periods of inclement weather. When working in an office setting, this position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, filing cabinets, etc. This position may also be required to climb, kneel or crouch, and reach with hands and arms.
