As a Traffic Intern, you'll play a vital role in improving Anchorage's transportation systems while gaining hands-on experience that makes a difference in our community. You will work directly with the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) on traffic projects by providing assistance in the collection of traffic flow counts, performing traffic speed studies, installing traffic counting equipment within roadways and along trails, and inputting traffic data into the MOA database.
This internship typically runs from the end of May through the middle/end of August. These internship dates may vary to accommodate varying college/university schedules. The weekly schedule for this position is Monday - Thursday, 10-hour days, 40 hours per week.
Required Job Qualification:
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to safely lift 50 pounds
- Comfortable using a 5-pound hammer to anchor equipment in pavement
- Ability to work safely within active roadways and near traffic
Essential Functions within the Role:
- Collecting peak hour traffic flow
- Performing spot speed studies, trail counts, and manual intersection counts
- Processing and entering data, performing data editing for accident analyses
- Installing traffic counters within roadways and along trail systems
- Performing other duties as needed
Work Environment & Physical Conditions
This position involves a combination of office and fieldwork. When in the office, this role regularly requires sitting, standing, walking, and using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.
Fieldwork will frequently be along or near busy roadways or intersections, and is done outside where inclement weather may be encountered. This position may be required to lift up to 50 pounds to install traffic equipment.
