Job Summary
The Head Start Special Needs Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting children with disabilities and their families. This position provides additional assistance to the classroom teacher in planning, organizing and supervising children with identified special needs who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Job Responsibilities:
- Works directly with children with identified special needs ages 3-5, in daily classroom activities;
- Understanding of IEP processes and regulations governing special education services while following recommendations outlined in the child's IEP;
- Ability to implement behavior management strategies that promote positive behavior among students.
- Implement Active Supervision in classroom to ensure safe environments for all children;
- Exhibits an understanding of Head Start School Readiness outcomes by incorporating them into the classroom as directed by the Head Start teacher;
- Assures compliance with HSCFDC Employee Handbook, Code of Conduct, Head Start Performance Standards, and WI Daycare Licensing Regulations.
- Assists the teacher in planning children’s individual and group learning experiences, indoor play activities, music and art, hygiene and nutrition programs;
- If needed, participate in parent meetings and individual conferences;
- Attends staff meetings, training sessions, etc.;
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Strong ability to communicate effectively with children, families, and professionals in various settings.
- Experience working with children, particularly those with disabilities, is essential.
- Knowledge of childhood development principles is crucial for advocating effectively for children's needs.
- Demonstrated experience in classroom management techniques that foster an inclusive environment.
- Good knowledge of preschool child’s mental, emotional and social development.
- Ability to keep records and make reports.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Patience, good judgement, resourcefulness.
- Reliability and good attendance are mandatory.
- Ability to pass criminal background check and health screen.
Physical Activity: Normal office procedures, able to lift and carry 50 pounds safely, sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pulling, pushing, twisting, and turning.
