Head Start of Eastern Orange County, Newburgh, NY is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Disabilities, Mental Health & Transition Specialist to join our team.
The Disabilities, Mental Health & Transition Specialist is responsible for implementing, overseeing and coordinating services related to children’s disabilities, mental health/social emotional needs, and transitions within an early childhood education setting. This role involves close collaboration with families, staff, and community partners to ensure each child receives the support they need.
Key responsibilities include:
- Facilitating assessments and supporting the development of individualized plans for children.
- Attending CPSE meetings and advocating/aligning services for children.
- Working with staff/contractors to implement strategies that support children’s behavioral, emotional and developmental needs.
- Assisting children with special needs in the classroom, ensuring accommodation and modifications are provided.
- Meeting with families to address mental health concerns, provide support & resources.
- Managing transitions for children entering, leaving, or moving within the program, ensuring a smooth & supportive process.
- Ensuring that all services are provided in a holistic manner, supporting the child’s overall development and well-being.
The ideal candidate will be a hands-on, proactive individual who possesses a strong passion and understanding of early childhood education, including child development and developmentally appropriate practices. They will demonstrate the ability to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all children. Additionally, they must align with our policy of no suspensions/expulsions, focusing instead on positive behavior interventions and fostering growth for every child
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree:
The degree should be in one of the following fields: Early Childhood Education (ECE), Mental Health, Psychology, Special Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Counseling, or a related field.
- *NYS Early Childhood Certification is a plus*
- Experience, Knowledge & Strong Commitment/Understanding of:
- Early Childhood Development, including an understanding of the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical developmental stages of young children.
- Working with children with disabilities, social-emotional/mental health challenges, trauma informed care and IEPs in an early childhood setting.
- Positive guidance strategies to support children's emotional and behavioral development.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with children, families, staff and community/community partners.
- Highly organized team player with proficiency in using computers and software for documentation, data management, and communication.
- Valid Driver’s License.
