The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description The Research Scientist (RS) 2 will conduct basic and advanced research, statistical analysis, study design, survey design and implementation, data collection and analysis, outcome interpretation and report development and publication in support of the New York State Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Under the direction of a senior Research Scientist, the RS 2 will assist with the evaluation of cross-cutting initiatives in the New York State WIC program, including enhanced fruit and vegetable benefits, remote appointments, medically indicated infant formula prescriptions, and WIC technology modernization. The incumbent will design, pilot-test, and implement SAS-based algorithms for extracting, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual WIC transaction data that can be used to tack trends in program participation and benefit utilization over time. The incumbent will assist with the development, conduct, and translation of WIC special projects studies and disseminate results that can be used by nutrition program administrators to implement and evaluate evidence-based practices with the goal of enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of WIC-supported public health nutrition initiatives and strategies.
The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications G22: A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related degree. Related degrees may include Medical Anthropology, Psychology, Nutrition, Nursing, Pharmacology, Mathematics, Education, Medical Geography, Sociology, Economics, or other relevant Social Science, or Natural Sciences and three years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a Master’s degree in one of the above fields and two years of such experience in the appropriate fields; OR a Doctorate in the appropriate field. Preferred Qualifications: Preferred candidates will have experience in the development and management of a large database that is used to support a public health surveillance system. They will have knowledge of principles and methods of public health surveillance and experience in applying the standard criteria for evaluating the effectiveness and usefulness of public health surveillance systems. Experience in the following areas is also preferred: an ability to link public health program knowledge to conceptual modeling, statistical analysis, and interpretation of results; evidence of excellent analytic and critical thinking, and scientific writing skills; a track record of presenting surveillance and research results to technical and non-technical audiences; intermediate or better proficiency in Statistical Analysis System (SAS) programming, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; and experience in spatial analysis using ArcView or other publicly-available software.
