Job Summary:

The EVS Director is responsible for overseeing the environmental services operations within the nursing home to ensure a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for residents, staff, and visitors. This includes managing the housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance functions, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, and leading a team to maintain high standards of cleanliness and infection control throughout the facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Supervision:

    • Supervise, train, and evaluate environmental services staff, including housekeepers and laundry personnel.
    • Ensure staff compliance with facility policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
    • Conduct regular team meetings to address performance, quality issues, and any challenges.
  • Operational Management:

    • Develop and implement cleaning schedules for all areas of the facility, ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness.
    • Oversee laundry services, ensuring linens and personal clothing are cleaned and sanitized properly.
    • Coordinate maintenance and repair work in the facility in collaboration with the maintenance team.
  • Infection Control:

    • Ensure strict adherence to infection control protocols, including proper cleaning and disinfection procedures to minimize the risk of cross-contamination and infection.
    • Monitor and enforce the proper use of cleaning chemicals and equipment to maintain safety and effectiveness.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance:

    • Perform routine inspections of all areas to ensure compliance with cleanliness standards and regulations.
    • Prepare for regulatory agency inspections and surveys, ensuring all standards are met.
    • Track and report on service delivery performance, making improvements as needed.
  • Budgeting & Inventory Management:

    • Manage the environmental services budget, ensuring efficient use of resources.
    • Monitor inventory levels of cleaning supplies, linens, and other necessary materials, ordering as needed.
    • Maintain records for all purchases, ensuring cost control and optimal use of resources.
  • Collaboration & Communication:

    • Collaborate with other department heads (nursing, dietary, activities) to ensure environmental services align with patient care needs.
    • Communicate effectively with staff, residents, families, and visitors regarding cleaning schedules, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Training & Development:

    • Develop and implement ongoing staff training on cleaning procedures, infection control, and safety practices.
    • Promote continuous improvement in the EVS department through education and feedback.

Qualifications:

  • Education & Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Services, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental services, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role in a healthcare setting.
    • Experience in infection control and regulatory compliance (OSHA, CDC, state health codes) is essential.
  • Skills:

    • Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to supervise, motivate, and develop a team.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment, particularly in healthcare environments.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
  • Certifications (preferred but not required):

    • Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Professional (CHESP) or other related certifications.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, bend, and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment safely.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a healthcare setting with exposure to environmental hazards (e.g., cleaning chemicals, infection risk).
  • Must be available for on-call emergencies, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
