Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Perioperative Unit Coordinator performs a variety of clerical and patient service duties necessary to maintain an efficient flow of operations for Perioperative Services. The Perioperative Unit Coordinator (PUC) performs secretarial / clerical duties associated with the clinical functioning of a unit.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Communicates with other departments to get inpatients ready for transport to the Operating Room (OR), to avoid delays with the surgery schedule
  • Manages inpatient transportation
  • Collaborates with OR charge nurse, Prep / Recovery charge nurse, and APS nurse to ensure timely patient throughput
  • Communicates with OR nursing staff regarding surgical times and wait times
  • Communicates appropriate and accurate information to other hospitals departments and services
  • Verifies patient information
  • Monitors front desk area for traffic control and to ensure patients / visitors are appropriately served
  • Verifies vendors and other visitors entering the OR for appropriate credentialing, identification, and attire
  • Collaborates with OR nursing staff to place family members in consult rooms as needed
  • Performs a variety of clerical and patient service duties necessary to maintain efficient flow of operations for Perioperative services
  • Ensures OR supply carts are stocked with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for physicians, residents, and other visitors
  • Collaborates with other departments to maintain supplies for POC testing
  • Maintains a clean and tidy desk area and entrance to the OR
  • Prints patient labels
  • Prints surgery schedules and provides updates as needed
  • Maintains surgery schedule and log including times
  • Answers phone lines within company guidelines, routes callers to appropriate destination and, answers questions
  • Manages and routes incoming / outgoing mail
  • Maintains all intraoperative forms in a filing system and maintains par levels
  • Places facility, biomedical, and IT work orders as needed
  • Manages Scrub Ex cards and Radiology Exposure badges
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medical terminology
  • Adheres to State and Federal safety guidelines, and Joint Commission and AORN standards
  • Monitors family waiting room as needed.
  • Assists other departments retrieve needed patient information / patient labels.
  • Assists with departmental stocking needs

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) recommended
  • 6 months of clerical experience in hospital or health care setting preferred
  • Heart Saver certification required
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of clinical processes and Perioperative policies and procedures
  • Alpha / numeric filing skills
