Role and Facility Information
The Department of Surgery at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) is seeking a full-time Orthopaedic Surgeon to provide regional services to Northern BC. UHNBC is designated as a Regional Trauma Centre Level 3 that sees approximately 47,000 emergency room visits per year. The successful applicant will work with six other local Orthopaedic Surgeons in providing comprehensive care to the community, with a referral base within the region. On-call commitment includes extended regional coverage within the region. There is also the opportunity to provide regional care through visiting specialists clinics in other service areas in the Northern Health Authority (currently visiting Quesnel, Vanderhoof and Smithers).
The successful applicant's focus will be providing general orthopaedic call for the health service delivery area region. There is no spine in the call or the general practice, but you can expect hand call as part of the regular call. There is an expectation that the candidate will be involved in teaching. The service typically has junior staff that includes medical students, elective students, family medicine residents and R4 Orthopaedic Residents. The teaching includes scheduled Orthopaedic rounds as well as daily interactions in the ORs and Orthopaedic clinics. Approx.. 120 trauma cases are seen by each Orthopaedic Surgeon per year.
The referral process will be from Family Physicians and will include Foot & Ankle, Sports Injuries, Primary THA, Primary TKA, Primary Hip and Knee Arthroplasty and Community-Level Trauma.
Applicants are required to be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and must be licensed (or eligible for licensure) by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Completion of Foot & Ankle Fellowship is desirable.
