Position Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Health Officer, the medical director will provide primary care to patients. The care will be appropriate for an outpatient, primary care community health center with a multicultural, multilingual, and an economically diverse patient population, as well as, a rural patient population.

HPC employs a team-based approach to care delivery for all patients. Clinical staff work with their team to effectively use huddles at the start of each clinic day, utilize standing orders when applicable, use evidence-based approaches to patient-care such as teaching self-management to patients, emphasize seamless care coordination for all patients, strive to understand the vulnerable populations served, and adjust services to fit patient needs. Upon hire, all staff receives orientation regarding benefits of the HPC team-based approach to population health. This role is approximately 70% direct patient care and 30% administrative responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Examine, diagnose, and treat patients with a focus on physician specialty (pediatrics or family medicine)- must be comfortable with newborn care.
  • Works within a multi-disciplinary team to deliver integrated comprehensive care that is both evidence-based and high quality
  • Act as primary consultant on specialty cases referred by other staff providers.
  • Complete medical charts and encounter forms following each visit, in compliance with all HPC policies and procedures related thereto.
  • Assist in internal quality control audits.
  • Provide quality medical care according to standards established by the Chief Health Officer.
  • Maintain staff privileges at community hospitals in the area, as requested.
  • Attend internal and external meetings / workshops / conferences and participate on task forces / committees, as deemed necessary by the Chief Health Officer and / or CEO.
  • Perform minor uncomplicated procedures, consistent with skills and clinical privileges.
  • Manage all requests for learners at HPC
  • Complete call schedule
  • Work closely with nurse clinic director to ensure clinics provide optimal care by assisting with previsit planning process, addressing patient satisfaction, and creating clinical protocols
  • Active participation in continuous process improvement committee and staff training
  • Assist Chief Health Officer and RN clinic director in maintaining compliance with regulatory agency requirements
  • Serve as backup for Chief Health Officer from time to time
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Staff membership and privileges granted by the HPC Board of Directors (approval of credentialing and privileging applications).
  • Ability to relate well with patients and other health care personnel.
  • Social and cultural sensitivity appropriate to ethnically and economically diverse patient-and employee-base.
  • Willingness to educate patients and the community in health maintenance and the role of the health care team.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Commitment to expanding access to care for the underserved.
  • Ability to care for the medical needs of a rural population.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership
  • Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited medical school. ACGME accredited residency program.
  • Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Kansas.
  • Current CPR (BLS) certifications. ACLS preferred.
  • Board certification required. Board eligibility.
  • Kansas DEA registration required.
  • Approval of Kansas Charitable Care Provider Application.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in Spanish preferred.
  • Knowledge of public health principles and practices preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate clinical privileges required.
  • Previous experience providing care at a community healthcare center or similar environment.
  • Typical Physical Demands :

  • Prolonged sitting or standing may be required.
  • Ability to lift to 25 pounds; occasionally up to 60 pounds.
  • Those physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with normal medical office will be performed on a repetitive basis.
  • The ability to distinguish letters and symbols, as well as the ability to utilize telephones, computer terminals, and copiers is required.
  • Work under stressful conditions as well as irregular hours may be required.
  • Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation, and other conditions common to a clinical environment may routinely be encountered.
