North County Serenity House, a Program of HealthRIGHT 360, was founded in 1966 to provide substance use disorder services in the community. North County Serenity House provides a gender-responsive and trauma-informed environment, using evidence-based and best practices that recognize and account for the role that trauma frequently plays in substance use and criminal histories of women. For clients with co-occurring mental illness, we provide integrated substance use and mental health services which treat both conditions as primary. Our residential facility serves up to 120 women (with capacity for up to 20 children under 5 years of age) seeking recovery from substance use disorders.

The Medical Technician I (Med Tech I) works in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure best possible treatment outcome for the client and provide treatment in accordance with HealthRIGHT 360’s philosophy, goals, policies, mission, and vision. Med Tech I provides facility coverage by supervising the participants during medication line, withdrawal management, and free time. This position is customer service-focused and is quick to take the lead in providing crisis intervention and participant stabilization. Med Tech II assists clients in self-administering their medication, teaches clients to self-manage their illness and physical health condition, coach’s clients to keep appointments with primary care physicians or other health appointments, screens clients for symptoms of common infectious diseases, and follows established policies and procedures to triage client medical complaints and links clients to the appropriate level of care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct Service Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a high degree of self-awareness and stay calm under pressure.
  • Assist with assessment, intake, transition, and discharge of clients entering/exiting the withdrawal management unit.
  • Demonstrate strong crisis intervention and participant stabilization skills.
  • Complete detox rounds and behavioral support rounds at 30-minute intervals and document each round accurately.
  • Monitor clients’ progress in withdrawal management and maintain strong communication with the medical team.
  • Provide medical and behavioral crisis intervention and triages clients as needed within scope of practice.
  • Monitor the medication line and observe client’s medication self-administration.
  • Document client’s medication self-administration with accuracy.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the treatment team and communicates any behavioral concerns to the client’s Case Manager, Mental Health Clinician, Counselor, Physician, and Psychiatrist.
  • Seek consultation when encountering new and/or high risk medical or clinical circumstances.
  • Coordinate with referral sources for warm hand offs to and from the program.
  • Ensure Releases of Information are obtained and on file for all prescribing physicians of the clients.
  • Consult with prescribing providers on behalf of Addiction Medicine Team (AMT).
  • Provide alcohol and drug counseling and support, maintain appropriate/ethical boundaries with all participants, monitor participant conduct, record participant activity, and inform treatment team of potential concerns.
Documentation Responsibilities:
  • Write and complete all progress notes within 72 hours of service delivery.
  • Maintain compliance with due dates for all clinical documentation.
  • Responsible for completing withdrawal management paperwork.
  • Documentation must be maintained in compliance with agency policy and procedures, HIPAA, 42-CFR, and funder standards.
  • Document all client UA’s using the UA form and a progress note.
  • Complete same day incident reports.
  • Document withdrawal management rounds and behavioral support rounds every 30 minutes.
  • File the documentation of the rounds in accordance with agency policy.
  • Maintain all medical documentation that includes but is not exclusive to: Centrally Stored Medication and Destruction forms, Medication Self-Administration forms, Controlled Substance logs, Shift-to-Shift Count forms, Discharge Medication forms.
  • Ensure all medical documentation received from participants is uploaded into the electronic healthcare record and communicates to appropriate staff.
  • Document client updates and incidents in the facility log daily.
Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Answer telephone and respond to inquiries regarding withdrawal management services within 24 hours.
  • Sign off medications, count controlled medications, read log entries for up-dates, and record all changes.
  • Maintain supplies for urine and oral fluid drug testing and ensures Chain of Custody for all positive tests.
  • Collect, organize, and report results of daily urinalyses.
  • Maintain stock of OTC medications and First Aid supplies.
  • Act as liaison for removal of biohazardous waste.
  • As needed, assist Office Assistant with duties of checking in visitors and monitoring visits, ensuring participants sign in/out with a valid pass, monitoring clients when they return from off-site passes, and checking all bags upon entering the facility.
  • Sign emergency passes when primary counselor is out of the office.
  • Perform periodic facility checks to ensure and maintain the safety and security of the facility.
Training, Supervision, and Quality Improvement Responsibilities:
  • Actively participate in agency and team meetings.
  • Communicate collaboratively with all members of the behavioral health team including medical, mental health, substance use disorder, and other staff.
  • Complete all assigned training in a timely manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Certification, or Licensure
  • AOD registration such as RADT, SUDRC, or RATC
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Higher degree preferred.
  • Possess a valid CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Experience
  • Experience working on a substance abuse treatment center or relapse prevention and recovery in a residential or withdrawal management/detox setting.
Background Check and Other Requirements
  • Must complete background check and livescan clearance
  • Must be able to meet credentialing requirements.
