JOB SUMMARY
To deliver dental care to the patient population served by HealthFIRST Bluegrass Inc. and improve the oral health of the community. Assist in planning and implementing the Dental program goals and objectives. Provide clinical oversight to the Dental staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Make visual examinations of the patient’s teeth and surrounding structures utilizing X-rays, mouth mirror, explorers, instruments and other diagnostic procedures
- Enter findings and all other appropriate documentation in a Dental chart in a timely manner.
- Decide upon and carry to completion the most feasible plan of treatment
- Locate and repair cavities in teeth
- Extract infected or otherwise diseased or troublesome teeth or refer patients for impacted teeth or root canal work
- May treat diseases of teeth, gums and mouth with appropriate drugs or surgery
- Make recommendations to patient as to indicated procedures for securing and maintaining good oral hygiene and Dental health
- Participate in community health educational activities
- Participate in Medical Staff meetings, appropriate committees and all other staff and department conferences
- Assist in the selection and hiring process for Dental employees and orient, train, and evaluate clinical skill level of Dental staff
- Communicates on a regular basis with the Chief Dental Officer regarding clinical skill level of dental staff
- Make oral and written medical reports to the Chief Dental Officer
- Coordinate the purchase of Dental equipment and supplies
- Perform other administrative duties in the day-to-day operation of the Dental program
- Perform other duties assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Work is performed under the administrative direction of the Chief Dental Officer. Provides close clinical supervision to the dental staff. Integrates high quality patient care into the clinic and training practices. Promotes a strong team atmosphere with the dental staff. Promotes HealthFirst Bluegrass policies and procedures with the dental staff. Orients, trains, and evaluates clinical skill level of dental staff. May assist the Chief Dental Officer with staff discipline and performance evaluation/feedback as needed.
REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Graduate of an accredited Dental school. Maintain a current Kentucky license. Maintain a current DEA license. Criminal background check required.
REQUIRED SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS
This position requires effective oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and intermediate computer literacy. Also:
- Comprehensive knowledge of current theories, techniques and practice of preventive and restorative dentistry for children, adults, pregnant women, and patients with complex medical or social conditions
- Ability to make judgments and decisions based on sensory and verifiable criteria, to determine the extent of Dental disability and method of treatment.
- Ability to communicate effectively, with patience and tact, when working with apprehensive and anxious patients, and those in pain
- Ability to maintain records and make reports
- Ability to manage the Dental unit
- Ability to supervise Dental staff
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Incumbent must possess the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Incumbent must possess the ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Incumbent must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Incumbent must possess the ability to work with and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Incumbent must possess the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Incumbent must possess the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Incumbent must hold a current, valid Dental license in the state of Kentucky; must maintain certification in Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support; must maintain a DEA license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The incumbent is frequently to use hands and fingers to handle and feel; hands and arms to reach. The incumbent will also be required to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, or balance. The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close and distant vision within normal range, as well as ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIROMENT
Daily work activities are performed in a Dental clinic. The incumbent will interact with patients throughout the day; may be exposed to patients with contagious disease; will be exposed to blood and other bodily fluids; will be required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate.
