Job Summary:

The Behavioral Patient Care Technician (BPCT) supports clinical staff by managing patients with escalating or violent behaviors and reducing negative visitor behavior through communication techniques. They proactively round on high-risk patients, participate in post-incident debriefings, and stay updated on de-escalation training. Additionally, they monitor the safety of UMMC staff, students, and faculty in relation to patients under constant observation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Interpersonal skills to interact with patients, visitors, and staff. Verbal and written communication skills. Ability to understand and enforce safety procedures. Ability to communicate with clinical staff requests. Skill in providing services to individuals. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. Ability to resolve concerns from patient and clinical staff.

Responsibilities:

Monitors the safety of UMMC staff, students, faculty and students as it relates to a patient under the care of UMMC under treating physicians’ orders for constant observation for safety reasons.

Provide information to supervisor(s) and clinical staff in relation to the monitoring of the patient(s) assigned

Observes patients to detect behavioral patterns and reports observations to the clinical team.

Assists with interventions to de-escalate, restrain violent or suicidal patients by verbal or physical means.

Rounds on patients identified as potential for escalating behavior based on potential activation criteria.

Participates in team post-incident debriefing session and keep up to date on de-escalation training techniques and assignments.

Complete daily reports relative to assigned duties.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking.

Requirements:

Education and Experience Required:

One (1) year experience in a healthcare setting

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:

N/A

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience as a hospital tech or nursing assistant preferred.

Training in de-escalation principles such as CPI or WELLE
