Position Summary
The Central Sterile Processing Technician is a vital member of the healthcare team, responsible for the sterilization and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment. The technician ensures that all instruments are properly cleaned, sterilized, and available for surgical procedures. This role requires a strong understanding of sterilization procedures, aseptic techniques, and the ability to work independently while maintaining a high standard of organization and cleanliness in the central supply area. The technician must also demonstrate a cooperative attitude and effective communication skills to support the surgical team and overall facility operations.
Essential Functions
- Clean, wrap, and sterilize instruments effectively according to facility guidelines.
- Maintain central supply and sterile areas, clean and disinfected in an orderly and organized fashion.
- Ensure that all instruments, supplies, and equipment are properly maintained to support daily operations.
- Stock and organize supplies on central supply shelving, maintaining adequate levels of prepared supplies.
- Assist with the daily preparation of the OR and central supply for the next day’s schedule.
- Be available to assist in all areas of OR/central supply as needed.
- Communicate effectively regarding all aspects of job responsibilities.
- Foster a positive and professional environment by interacting with patients, peers, and leadership in a responsible manner.
- Maintain confidentiality of all facility and patient information as required by policy.
- Resolve conflicts appropriately by communicating with those involved.
- Accept constructive criticism and give suggestions in a professional manner.
- Request scheduled time off as needed and provide notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness according to established procedures.
Other Related Functions
- Participate in facility quality improvement activities, including safety, infection control, documentation, and adherence to sterilization guidelines.
- Report any breaches in sterilization or equipment failure to the manager in a timely manner to reduce incident risk.
- Demonstrate competency in performing job tasks and operating equipment appropriately.
- Attend and participate in all applicable training and development workshops scheduled by the facility.
- Understand and adhere to facility standards of conduct, HIPAA regulations, and safety protocols.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the manager.
Education/Training
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Training of sterilization procedures, aseptic techniques, and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment.
Licensure/Certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
Experience
- Central Sterile Processing a minimum one (1) year is required.
- Two (2) plus years of experience Multi-Specialty Ambulatory Surgery Center or Outpatient facility, preferred.
- Building strong relationships with Physicians.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate documentation related to sterile processing activities.
- Demonstrates a cooperative work attitude towards co-workers, management, patients, visitors, and physicians.
- Ability to set priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
