Definition
A full time, non-exempt position responsible for the direct provision of oral hygiene and appropriate oral health preventive services to dental patients of the Center. Will also be responsible for providing appropriate oral health education information to individuals and groups. He or she will provide clinical dental services and preventive dental care in a community health center setting functioning within the scope of his or her licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist. Registered Dental Hygienist is a core member of a collaborative care team that may involve the patient?s primary care provider, nursing staff, other dental care providers and/or other clinic staff.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Assists in the oral health management of all clinic patients.
- Obtains baseline oral hygiene assessment data based upon accepted principles of oral hygiene and periodontal care.
- Maintains and updates patient record accurately and completely in the electronic medical record to reflect the condition of the patient and the care or treatment provided nature of the patient visit.
- Provides oral health education and appropriate individual oral health counseling for all center dental patients. Oral health education may occur in group settings as well.
- Provides clinical oral hygiene services including dental prophylaxis, scaling, sealant application and fluoride application consistent with accepted professional practices and standards and in compliance with applicable state law and the center?s clinical protocols.
- Integration of appropriate patient dental hygiene care with other health care professionals involved in the patient?s health care management.
- May organize and perform preventive oral health presentations at on-site and off-site locations.
- Assists in the provision of technical assistance and health education in the community as requested.
- Participates in the QI program of the Dental Department of the center.
- Performs independent procedures as delegated and directed by Dental Program Director or Staff Dentist in accordance with state regulations and law as well as Dental Department protocols and directives.
- Assists in the maintenance of all Dental Department areas in compliance with Dental Department directive and policies as well as center infection control, exposure control, safety and other policies and procedures.
- Assists with various clinical and administrative functions of the center as appropriate and/or as directed.
- Ensures the proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials in accordance with Dental Department directives and center policies and in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Fully complies with the center?s Exposure Control Plan and immediately notifies Dental Program Director or Staff Dentist in event of potential risk of exposure.
- Travels when necessary to other HealthWorks? site(s) to administer dental hygiene services as needed.
- Performs other related and/or necessary tasks to achieve organizational and programmatic goals and objectives as instructed by Dental Program Director.
- Responsible for personal compliance with all applicable federal, state, local and center rules, regulations, protocols and procedures governing the practice of dental hygiene and the clinical provision of dental hygiene services as well as those relating to, but not limited to, personnel issues, workplace safety, public health and confidentiality.
