HEAPY is seeking a Building Performance & Modeling Technical Specialist in a flexible arrangement where you can do your best work in a hybrid or on-site work option out of our Raleigh office location.
Summary
Reporting to the Sustainability and Resiliency Strategies Leader, The Building Performance & Modeling Technical Specialist champions the integration and use of Building Performance concepts and tools, with a specific focus on Building (Energy) Modeling to produce Design Projects that align with HEAPY MEP2040 Goals and Purpose. This colleague is instrumental in the pursuit of the HEAPY Purpose and is influential across all HEAPY Practices and Market sectors. This influential position drives the rapid movement of HEAPY colleagues upstream within clients’ organizations to become more effective Trusted Advisors and Professional Services Consultants through extending HEAPY’s competencies, supporting improved workflows and tools utilization, researching evolving best practices and fringe innovators.
Qualifications
This position normally requires a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program and typically 5 years related experience in energy engineering in the Built environment (or equivalent working knowledge/experience). Top candidates for this role have a Professional Engineering registration and/or additional certification such as BESA BEMP, LEED, CBCP, CEA, CSDP BEP, CEM, CSBA, or EMPC. Candidates must have awareness of MEP 2040 initiatives, tools and technologies. A successful candidate must have the ability to demonstrate full understanding and application of capabilities and limitations of various software packages and automated engineering and design equipment to effectively direct their use for diverse engineering assignments. Experience periodically producing and publishing white papers and reports in relevant technical journals and making presentations at professional societies, conferences is highly valued.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintains clear knowledge of HEAPY Corporate Vision, Mission, and Core Values and demonstrates awareness of how those objectives relate to all position responsibilities.
- Assists theSustainability and Resiliency Strategies Leader in developing HEAPY “Thought” regarding Building Performance and the HEAPY approach to (energy performance) Modeling.
- Supports the ongoing measurement and verification of Client Building Performance goals during project operations.
- Provides methodologies and thought processes to be applied consistently across High-Performance projects by illustrating the value proposition of High-Performance systems thinking and associated Modeling tools and outputs.
- Works collaboratively to improve existing Design Standards and Details to meet overall HEAPY MEP2040 Goals. This includes:
- Leading refinements and tracking progress toward the HEAPY MEP 2040 Plan.
- Remaining on the forefront of new technical tools/resources within the industry, advising and educating team members on the applicability of such resources to applicable projects.
- Working closely with the Sustainability and Resiliency Strategies Leader to provide direction to Colleagues to ensure they are proactive regarding scope and fee inclusion for MEP 2040 client conversations and energy modeling on all applicable Practice projects.
- Working collaboratively with the HEAPY Engineering Manager and Sustainability and Resiliency Specialist to ensure Low GWP and EPD request processes are in place and improved over time.
- Working collaboratively with the Sustainability and Resiliency Specialist to determine the best approaches for measuring and modeling the impact of Embodied Carbon on HEAPY projects, in alignment with 2040 targets.
- Supporting the targeted investment in Client awareness to help clients realize this value-add.
- Chairs the HEAPY Building Performance Modeling Group, leading Practice representatives in creating the Modeling Approach for HEAPY projects and keeping colleagues apprised of the latest advancements in Building Performance concepts to MEP 2040 and overall industry alignment with HEAPY Purpose and ASHRAE 2030 Vision. This includes:
- Ensuring the updating of HEAPY Building Performance standards and modeling-related tools regularly with an emphasis on continually refining the value modeling adds to projects.
- Developing, providing and monitoring education for HEAPY Colleagues, establishing a high-level baseline of modeling knowledge to integrate into all HEAPY projects.
- Coordinating meetings with industry leaders to stay abreast of emerging developments.
- Reviews and determines which Building Performance organizations to leverage or follow for available training and development on national standards and codes.
- Attends and provides technical presentations at HEAPY conferences and selected relevant technical conferences.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
- Ability to remain sedentary at desk for long periods of time while operating a keyboard and using a computer screen.
- Ability to communicate in person, electronically and via phone with other individuals.
- Possession of Reliable transportation to and from project sites, regional offices client sites and event locations.
- Ability to work in all elements of indoor and outdoor environments which include the heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, etc.
- Ability to access all areas of the jobsite with activities that include ascending and descending stairs, scaffolding, ladders, navigating elevation changes, etc.
- Ability to move, transport, or position items weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to apply established protocols and practices in a timely manner and follow safety guidelines for both company and clients.
- Ability to gather, organize and evaluate information related to projects and calculations (such as building performance, energy data, viability of technical tools, etc.).
