Summary
This colleague independently performs a variety of assignments involving the application of fire protection codes, standards and complimenting fire protection design techniques for a small project or selected segments of a larger project. The incumbent must be capable of exercising independent judgment in analyzing, evaluating, selecting, and applying standard fire protection techniques, procedures, and criteria to make minor design adaptations and modifications. This position requires the colleague to set assignments that have clear and specific objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables.
Qualifications
This position normally requires a 4-year fire science or engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program and typically 6 - 9 years of relevant experience (or equivalent working knowledge/experience/advanced degree in engineering) in fire protection systems and standards in the Built Environment. This includes considerable experience and knowledge of fire protection systems, codes and standards, and experience in various fire modeling and simulation software, along with design software. An incumbent in this position should be in possession of a Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certification and be working toward Professional Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) Registration. FPE registration would be attained within the first 2 years of attaining this position level.

Duties & Responsibilities

- Responsible for the fire protection system evaluation and design engineering services following Corporate Vision, Mission, and Core Values as well as Corporate ISO Systems View(s), and related professional standards, client requirements, and corporate objectives.
- Collaborates with more experienced Fire Protection Engineering Design colleagues to perform building and life safety code analysis for new and existing buildings.
- Recommends fire protection, alarm system, smoke control, fire barrier, emergency exit, sprinkler and alarm systems needs and requirements in building designs.
- Prepares basic plan details and outlines, cost estimates, and performs calculations in support of broader engineering activities involving the design of fire protection equipment, components or systems.
- Lays out full fire protection, alarm system smoke control, fire barrier, emergency exit, sprinkler and alarm system needs and plan designs, plan details and outlines, identifies quantities of materials, cost estimates, and performs calculations for a detailed segment of a project.
- Prepares technical specifications for review and approval.
- Evaluates vendors’ bids and drawings to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Reviews and approves fire protection system design drawings for assigned segments of project.
- Assists with development of design guides, guide specifications, and design control procedures when directed by Practice Technical Leader.
- Prepares technical reports such as life cycle cost analysis, facility conditions assessments, and other engineering guidance for clients.
- Performs field tests & measurements, collects field data, as necessary.
- Aids and supports proposal teams or proposal managers as requested.
- Collaborates with and supports Fire Protection Design Engineer I & II colleagues on their technical development and professional growth.
- Collaborates with field observation colleagues to perform field observations and tests, measurements, collect field data, and prepare field reports and related documentation.
- Continuously remains updated on fire codes, safety standards and best practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Ability to remain sedentary at desk for long periods of time while operating a keyboard and using a computer screen.
- Ability to operate a mouse, stylus, or similar tool to make adjustments on electronic visuals.
- Ability to see details of objects on a screen, including differences in colors, shades and brightness.
- Ability to communicate in person, electronically and via phone with other individuals.
- Possession of Reliable transportation to and from the project.
- Ability to work in all elements of indoor and outdoor environments which include the heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, etc.
- Ability to access all areas of the jobsite with activities that include ascending and descending stairs, scaffolding, ladders, navigating elevation changes, etc.
- Capable of working in physical positions that may include maneuvering self into different positions traditionally is achieved by kneeling, sitting, standing, squatting, bending over, etc.
- Ability to move, transport, or position items weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to apply established protocols and practices in a timely manner. and follow safety guidelines for both company and clients.
- Ability to gather, organize and evaluate information related to projects and calculations (such as cost analysis, facility assessments, design calculations, etc.).
