The OGC seeks a highly motivated team player to support the daily legal operations of the Labor & Employment team. This position will primarily focus on labor law matters and report to the Senior Labor Counsel and serve as a partner in supporting labor and employment contracts and projects. We are targeting a bright college graduate with an interest in law and people for an introduction to labor & employment law by assisting the Labor & Employment team. This person will need to be adaptable, a self-starter, and a problem solver. The Labor & Employment Fellow will have the opportunity to experience first-hand the varied practice of a fast-paced in-house legal department. The candidate should have excellent writing, computer, organizational and communication skills, with the ability to multi-task and work with a team, and a demonstrated willingness to take initiative.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in New York City. The reasonable estimate, if hired in New York City, is $65,000 to $75,000. Please note this information is specific to those hired in New York City. For candidates outside New York City, the salary range will be aligned with the specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills, experience, training, certifications, and education.

Major Areas of Responsibility:
- Assist in union contract bargaining through meticulous notetaking and providing thoughts on union proposals.
- Maintain a database inventory of collective bargaining agreements.
- Edit and or update collective bargaining agreements once negotiated changes are ratified.
- Meet and consult with management teams from Hearst media properties to assist with contract negotiations.
- Review division requests for independent contractors and prepare independent contractor agreements and extensions.
- Assist with employment agreements for all Hearst entities globally.
- Review and process contingent worker tickets through an on-line system.
- Other duties as assigned to support the legal department.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Some background in or shown interest towards labor law and union negotiation.
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Ability to use video technology, such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom, for video meetings and conferences.
- Strong written/verbal communications skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
- Careful proofreader with attention to detail.
- Organized skills with an understanding of how to establish priorities and demonstrate flexibility as workloads fluctuate.
- Curious and proactive with the ability to solve problems, anticipate issues, use good judgment, and think strategically.
- Be responsive to direction.
- Effective and clear communicator able to engage in substantive discussion with more senior employees on a regular basis.
- Willingness to seek out work and see where their skills can be best used.
- The position is based in New York, NY. Must be willing to work onsite.
- Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States.
