Position Title : Program Manager

Location : Heart House / McShan Elementary School

Grades : K-5

Reports to : Program Director

Position Summary

The Program Manager will lead the McShan Reading Homeroom program, providing essential reading intervention services to refugee newcomers in grades K-5. This role involves managing and supporting students and volunteer tutors, conducting reading level assessments, and creating, updating, and implementing targeted lesson plans. Additional responsibilities include managing materials and schedules, coordinating with school staff, and ensuring effective delivery of the tutoring program during school hours, with occasional Saturday school days and summer sessions.  This role requires experience and expertise in the science of reading and language acquisition for elementary-age students, many of whom are non-native English speakers.

Key Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Oversee daily operations of the Reading Homeroom program.
  • Manage a team of volunteer tutors to ensure effective 1-on-1 tutoring.
  • Coordinate schedules for in-school tutoring and possible Saturday school programs.
  • Oversee reading components for the summer program, as needed.

Student Engagement and Support

  • Provide reading intervention using designated newcomer curriculum and support social-emotional learning needs.
  • Pair students with consistent tutors and supervise their progress.
  • Track student progress using the Hasbrouck Quick Phonics Screener and other tools.
  • Address the needs of students with disabilities, dyslexia, or trauma histories.
  • Volunteer Coordination

  • Train and support volunteer tutors, assisting with recruitment as needed.
  • Match volunteers effectively with students and provide materials and guidance.
  • Maintain volunteer schedules and track attendance.
  • Communication and Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Program Director to adhere to school guidelines, ensure effective services, and review outcomes.
  • Maintain strong relationships with school administration, teachers, and staff.
  • Provide weekly program updates to volunteer tutors.
  • Coordinate with school, district refugee services, and other organizations to support newcomer students.
  • Program Evaluation and Improvement

  • Collect and analyze data on student progress and program effectiveness.
  • Adjust curriculum and programming based on feedback and data.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of program activities and outcomes.
  • Events and Incentives

  • Organize end-of-year parties, family / community events, and other special events.
  • Implement reward systems to motivate and encourage students.
  • Note :   This role requires a collaborative spirit, as all staff in this nonprofit organization frequently work together on projects and events. A team-player mentality is essential.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Reading, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in reading intervention and literacy programs, especially with elementary and English Language Learner (ELL) students. Note : Students are almost all speakers of languages other than English or Spanish.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Capacity to work both independently and within a team.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and other relevant software.
  • Dedication to serving diverse and underserved populations.
  • Understanding of social-emotional learning and trauma-informed care principles.

    Additional Information

  • Training and support will be provided by the Program Director and AmeriCorps members during the onboarding period.
  • Position start date : February 2025. Hours : 8am-4pm Monday to Friday
  • Pay : $50,000.00 - $54,000.00 per year depending on experience
