Description
The role of the Licensed Practical Nurse is to work as a member of the corrections health care team by demonstrating knowledge for assisting in the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Under the supervision of the RN(s), directs and guides patient teaching and activities that commensurate with his/her education and demonstrated competencies

Have strong mental acuity to tolerate verbal and mental communications from inmates and maintain a professional demeanor.

Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations within the correctional unit.

Delivers nursing care in a manner that minimizes the risk of transfer of infection by using approved infection and control guidelines.

Performs emergency and rescue response functions: As a result of emergency codes and drills held without notice to medical emergencies at the facility including maximum security areas.

Performs the following assessments and health care services; Neurology, Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Endocrine and Metabolic, Gastrointestinal, Renal and Genitourinary, Psychiatric Disorders, blood draws and IV therapy, care routines, infection control, and wound management.

Performs testing/procedures per provider orders such as EKGs, ear irrigation, dressings, ace wraps, and nebulizer treatments. Performs phlebotomy/lab tests according to lab policy and procedure.

Conducts sick calls.

Maintains clinical competency and exhibits professional growth and development.

Reporting unusual incidents, identifying breaches of security, and adhering to security protocol.

Under supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), assists in the assessment of the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of patients in the Health Care Unit and, as necessary, in the housing units.

Implements individualized treatment programs as directed by the Health Care Clinician.

Count controlled substances, syringes, needles, and sharps at the beginning of each shift with another staff member and sign count logs.

Implements clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols. Intervenes with proper safety techniques, procedures, and standard precautions.

Responds to a code or health emergency within standard guidelines.

Implements medical plan through administering medications in accordance with Health Care Clinician’s orders and protocols:

Administers medications according to proper techniques and procedures including IV therapy (when certified) and all other approved routes of administration.

Uses pharmacy knowledge and available resources to include drug reaction and overdose in administration of medications.

Implements medical plans through obtaining diagnostic tests in accordance with Health Care Clinician’s orders and protocols:

Obtains body fluid specimens and performs EKG’s using proper techniques and procedures.

Communicates information to ancillary departments using established referral process.
-
Assists the Health Care Clinician in medical or minor surgical procedures as necessary and/or requested to meet individual needs of patients.

Implement nutrition and therapeutic diet plan through proper techniques and procedures as ordered by Health Care Clinicians.

Document nursing encounters using the SOAP form of charting as required by policy and procedure maintaining a commitment to legal accountability.

Resolves patient issues as appropriate – notifies appropriate supervisor if unresolved.

Inventory, order and restock supplies as needed.

Recognizes signs/symptoms and/or patient changes and notify Clinician.

Measures and documents the patient’s primary problems, including vital signs, basic labs, psycho-social history, and medications to prepare the patient for examination by the provider, anticipating the need for required supplies and equipment.

Participates as part of the care team with efficient communication among team members.

Review patient charts and notify the provider of lab and radiology results outside abnormal parameters.

Provides patient education to clients utilizing the electronic medical record.

Washes and prepares instruments for sterilization.

Exhibits punctuality and dependability in attendance and work habits.

Performs other related job duties as required.

Qualifications

Spanish fluency is desirable, but not essential.

Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.
Education: Graduation from an accredited LPN program.
License:
Current Florida LPN/LVN license
