What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lab/Mohs Technician position at Heartland Dermatology Center?
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direct supervision of the Mohs Surgeon and Lab Director, a technician prepares surgical, grossing area, and pathology specimens, biopsies, and slides for the microscopic study of tissues by the Mohs Surgeon. The technician labels slides and enters information into automated systems and operates and gathers pertinent information for reports. The technician performs tasks under strict guidelines and regulations of the Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the State of Kansas Health Department, and other regulatory agencies. Does related work as required.
Thorough knowledge of modern laboratory techniques and procedures; good knowledge of histologic techniques; good knowledge of related laboratory terminology; skill in the operation of standard laboratory equipment and apparatus; ability to understand and follow complex technical instructions; ability to pay close attention to detail; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, and database software in performing work assignments; ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; familiarity with the techniques of maintaining a filing system; accuracy; good dexterity; dependability; initiative; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
PHI ACCESS AND DISCLOSURE: It is the policy of our practice that all providers and staff preserve the integrity and confidentiality of protected health information (PHI) pertaining to our patients. To ensure that a Mohs Technician has the necessary medical and PHI to provide the highest quality medical care possible, she/he will have access to the patient’s medical chart, demographic information, and, when necessary financial information. The Mohs Technician must sign a Confidentiality Agreement before receiving access to this information.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepares grossing area and specimens for the pathologist, Mohs surgeon
- Prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures for the pathologist.
- Embeds, cuts, and stains tissue for histologic examination
- Prepares frozen sections
- Recording patient information, including surgical in laboratory log
- Maintains and operates equipment and instruments
- Refill and maintain chemicals in stainer
- Clean and maintain cryostat
- Records and files findings as directed
- Maintains all records, updates, standard operating procedures, etc., as required by regulations
- Enters information such as demographics, order numbers, etc., into notes and systems
- Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, and database software in performing work assignments
- Documents all information and/or care in the patient’s record
- Pick up and keep countertops disinfected, organized, and clean daily
- Empty trash—both contaminated and non-contaminated according to OSHA guidelines
- Clean and prepare histopathology slides
- Other duties as assigned
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of a science program with at least an Associate of Science degree
- Willing to work independently yet closely with others as a team player
- Able to take initiative
- Possess strong attention to detail
- Able to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) with patients, providers, and staff
- Able to learn and perform procedures and tasks as listed in the job description
- Able to lift and move 20 to 40 pounds
- Have legible handwriting
- Dress professionally—scrubs and closed-toe shoes
- May perform other incidental tasks as needed or as required.
