What are the responsibilities and job description for the MOHS Staff Nurse -LPN or RN position at Heartland Dermatology Center?
RESPONSIBILITIES: Deliver patient care as a Mohs medical team member providing the most efficient and
highest quality care possible while maintaining compassion for the patient’s needs. As directed, assist the
Mohs Surgeon/Provider with surgery, procedures, exams and documentation. Act as a patient advocate.
Assist with clean up of exam rooms and commons areas.
PHI ACCESS AND DISCLOSURE: It is the policy of our practice that all providers and staff preserve the
integrity and confidentiality of protected health information (PHI) pertaining to our patients. To ensure that a
staff member has the necessary medical and PHI to provide the highest quality medical care possible, staff
members will have access to the patient’s medical chart, demographic information, and, when necessary
financial information. All staff members must sign a Confidentiality Agreement before receiving access to
this information.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Escort patients to examination rooms
2. Obtain a history of present illness/concerns, obtain HPI and any updates
3. Do a review of systems with the patient
4. Perform Mohs pre-op history with patient
5. Take past, family, and social history
6. Update medical history, medication, and medication allergies
7. Prepare patients for examination and/or procedures
8. Assist the Mohs surgeon/provider in completing Mohs layers and obtaining hemostasis as well as
patient comfort between layers
9. Complete Mohs repair and suturing with the Mohs surgeon/provider and apply dressings to the
surgical site(s)
10. Complete patient charting/note, chief complaint, and review of systems, exam, assessment, and
procedure/treatment
11. Educate patients, so they understand the use of medications and post-op care
12. Write prescriptions, review the medication with a patient and answer any questions
13. Contact pharmacy as necessary
14. Obtain pathology results from abs and distribute reports to providers
15. Perform wound checks and additional patient education as necessary
16. Perform suture removals, and provide instructions on post-op wound care
17. Give injections as needed
18. Take phone calls and return phone messages
19. Call patients with pathology results
20. Make referrals and coordinate with other specialties
21. Manage prescription refill requests
22. Set up medical supplies and equipment for surgeries and procedures
23. Enter biopsy numbers, and complete path paperwork
24. Assist provider with patient consultations
25. Assist provider with biopsies, excisions, and surgeries
26. Prepare and fill surgery anesthetic vials and syringes
27. Complete Mohs maps
28. Complete temperature checks for refrigerators and other equipment as designated by CLIA
29. Verify inventory, and if needed, place the item(s) on the order list
30. Clean and prepare the exam room after each patient visit
31. Prepare instrument packs/gauze packs and sterilize using autoclave
32. Restock exam, surgical, and treatment areas
33. Pick up and keep countertops organized and cleaned
34. Empty and wipe down trash receptacles, both contaminated and non-contaminated, following
OSHA guidelines
35. Vacuum carpet outside exam rooms
36. Clean and maintain autoclave
37. Wash, fold and put away laundry
38. Check and change biohazard bags and boxes as needed
39. Monitor the current status of the work and projects for the Mohs team and Clinic Operation
Manager-Mohs
40. Attend meetings or conferences as assigned and reports on major points and actions resolved or to
be taken
41. Handle various matters involving contact with various staff that occurs between the clinician, lab,
and Pathologist
42. Initiate prior authorizations with patient insurance when requested
43. Communicate with billing regarding the correct charges for Mohs services and any consults
44. Prepares various documents or correspondence and handles confidential matters in accordance
with Heartland Dermatology policy and procedures
45. Ensure equipment operation, calls for repairs, maintains equipment inventories, and evaluates new
equipment and techniques.
46. Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
1. Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse
2. Graduate of an accredited nursing program, successfully passing the nursing state board exam.
3. Dress professionally—nursing uniform, nametag and shoes
