Job Responsibilities
- Collecting blood specimens from patients: This is the primary responsibility of a phlebotomist. You will be responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients through venipuncture or capillary puncture.
- Verifying patient information: Before drawing blood, you will need to verify patient information such as name, date of birth, and medical history to ensure that the correct tests are being performed.
- Labeling and storing blood specimens: After collecting blood, you will be responsible for labeling the specimens accurately and storing them properly to ensure they are not contaminated or mislabeled.
- Maintaining a clean and organized work area: You will need to maintain a clean and organized work area, including disposing of used needles and supplies safely and following infection control protocols.
- Communicating with patients and healthcare professionals: You will need to communicate with patients to help alleviate their fears and explain the procedure, as well as communicate with healthcare professionals about test results and patient care.
- Adhering to safety standards: Phlebotomists must follow safety standards to ensure their own safety and that of their patients. This includes proper use and disposal of equipment and following safety protocols to avoid needlestick injuries.
- Conducting basic laboratory tests: Depending on the workplace, phlebotomists may conduct basic laboratory tests such as glucose or cholesterol tests.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- 18 years of age or older
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
- Basic understanding of medical terminologies
- Ability to pass a criminal background check, DMV check, and drug screening
