Job Description Job Description Job Description : Heartland School Special Education TeacherPosition Title : Heartland School Special Education TeacherReports To : Mary Quiroz School PrincipalLocation : 5731 South 108th Street OmahaEmployment Type : Full-Time, ExemptPosition OverviewThe Heartland School Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing individualized instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs in a non-traditional educational setting. This role requires a dedicated educator who can adapt teaching strategies to meet the unique academic, social, and emotional needs of students, many of whom may face behavioral, developmental, or socio-emotional challenges. The teacher will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to create a supportive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that fosters student growth and success.Key ResponsibilitiesInstructional DutiesDevelop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in alignment with state and federal special education laws.Adapt curriculum and instructional methods to meet the diverse learning styles and needs of students in an alternative school setting.Deliver engaging lessons that focus on academic, social-emotional, and life skills development.Use evidence-based instructional strategies to address the needs of students with disabilities, including those with autism, emotional / behavioral disorders, ADHD, and learning disabilities.Classroom ManagementCreate and maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive classroom environment that supports learning and minimizes disruptions.Develop and implement behavior management plans tailored to individual student needs.Utilize de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed practices to support students during crises or challenging situations.Collaboration and CommunicationCollaborate with general education teachers, support staff, administrators, and families to ensure a cohesive approach to student education.Attend and actively participate in IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and professional development sessions.Maintain clear, consistent, and respectful communication with parents / guardians regarding student progress and needs.Data Collection and ReportingMonitor and document student progress toward IEP goals through ongoing assessments and observations.Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, behavior, and other relevant data.Prepare reports and documentation required for compliance with special education regulations.Professional DevelopmentStay current with best practices in special education, alternative education, and inclusive teaching strategies.Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities and training sessions.QualificationsEducation and CertificationBachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).Valid teaching license with Special Education endorsement with the Nebraska Department of EducationCertification in crisis intervention or de-escalation techniques (e.g., CPI, PBIS) is a plus.ExperienceMinimum of 2 years of experience teaching in a special education or alternative school setting is preferred.Experience working with students with emotional / behavioral challenges and other disabilities.Skills and CompetenciesStrong knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.Ability to differentiate instruction and implement accommodations and modifications effectively.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.Strong organizational and time-management abilities.Patience, empathy, and a passion for working with diverse learners.Proficiency in using educational technology and adaptive tools.Work Environment and Physical DemandsThe role may involve working with students who exhibit challenging behaviors.May require physical interventions or restraint in accordance with school policies (training provided).Requires standing, walking, and occasionally lifting materials or equipment.Why Join Us?Opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of students facing significant challenges.Supportive team environment with access to ongoing training and professional development.Competitive salary and benefits package.A chance to work in a dynamic, innovative educational setting.Phone : 402-393-0345 or 402-680-1651Company Description What is Heartland School?Heartland School is a Nebraska Department of Education Level III Education Service Provider that offers a rich and engaging educational experience to students K-12.With a total enrollment of 50 students Heartland School is able to attend to students in a therapeutic and enriching environment that encourages, sanctions, and allocates time for teachers and staff to get to know each of the students, their needs, how to assist them, and how to overcome deficits and capitalize on their strengths.There is the time to work with the students.
